5 symptoms of Liver disease that can be seen on hands and feet

The liver is the largest gland in the body, located in the upper right abdomen, primarily under the rib cage. It plays a crucial role in various bodily functions, including filtering blood, metabolising nutrients, producing bile, and storing vitamins. Any damage to the liver, leads to visible signs that emerge throughout different parts of the body, including hands and feet. Early detection of these symptoms allows patients to obtain prompt medical care. Here are 5 signs of liver damage that appear on the hands and feet...

2/12

Red palms (Palmar Erythema)

The medical condition known as palmar erythema, is recognised by a red palm. People experiencing liver disease develop abnormal redness in their palm skin, which primarily appears in the area beneath the thumb and little finger. Damage to liver cells produces blood flow alterations along with hormonal changes, which result in this red skin condition. The liver regulates blood vessels properly, until its failure causes the hands to show redness. The condition affects both hands with equal intensity, while remaining pain-free and itch-free. Medical evaluation becomes essential, when you experience liver and other disease symptoms together with this. Early diagnosis can help prevent complications and improve overall liver health outcomes.

3/12

Spider veins

Spider veins, also known as spider angiomas, present themselves as tiny red or purple networks of blood vessels beneath the skin surface. Liver disease leads to the development of spider veins, which appear on hands and feet. Liver damage causes hormonal imbalances and blood clotting problems, which result in the formation of spider veins. These occur through blood vessel enlargement, which happens near the skin surface. The condition of cirrhosis together with chronic liver disease, makes spider veins more likely to appear in liver damage patients. These vascular lesions do not produce any discomfort, but they serve as visible indicators that liver function has become impaired.

4/12

Clubbing of fingers and toes

Clubbing occurs when your fingers and toes become enlarged, while their tips swell up, and your fingernails or toenails develop downward curvature. The development of this change takes place gradually throughout time, and it often relates to both liver disease and blood oxygen level changes, and circulation problems. The appearance of clubbing symptoms together with liver-related indicators such as jaundice or fatigue, should prompt medical investigation for potential liver damage. A medical evaluation becomes necessary when you observe any alterations in your nail shape or finger and toe dimensions.

5/12

Yellow coloration (Jaundice) of hands and feet

A key sign of liver disease known as jaundice, produces yellow discoloration which affects both skin and eyes. The yellow pigmentation of the skin sometimes becomes visible on the skin of the palms and soles of feet. This occurs because a damaged liver prevents it from breaking down bilirubin, which then accumulates in blood and shows up in skin tissues. The yellow discoloration first appears in the face, then advances to other body regions until it reaches hands and feet. A yellow skin discoloration requires immediate medical evaluation, since jaundice indicates severe liver conditions.

6/12

Swelling (Edema) in feet and hands

Swelling or edema represents a typical indication of severe liver disease progression. Fluid accumulation in tissues becomes more noticeable in the feet and hands, because the liver fails to function correctly. The liver's inability to produce sufficient albumin proteins causes blood vessels to swell with fluid. Fluid leakages into tissues occur because of absent proteins, which results in swelling and discomfort. The swelling of hands and feet serves as an indication of liver disease worsening, while it commonly appears together with weight gain, abdominal swelling and fatigue.
