What is your body telling you?

It is widely known that those who follow a vegan or vegetarian diet are at risk for vitamin B12 deficiency. Our body needs vitamin B-12 to maintain healthy nerves, the production of red blood cells, and proper brain function. When the body lacks enough B-12, it can lead to various health issues. Often, the symptoms creep up gradually, making it hard to pinpoint the deficiency. Following are 5 warning signs that could signal that the body is not getting enough vitamin B-12.

2/6

Strange sensations in hands and feet

One of the earliest symptoms of a vitamin B-12 insufficiency is this. A person probably needs more vitamin B12 if they are feeling strange feelings in their hands and feet, such as tingling or numbness. This occurs as a result of B-12's critical function in preserving the health of nerve cells. These strange sensations can result from nerves not functioning correctly due to a deficit. This could develop into more serious nerve injury if untreated. Therefore, pay attention to these unusual feelings as they may be your body's way of warning you about a more serious problem.

3/6

Fast or irregular heart rate

A rapid or erratic heart rate is another unexpected indicator of a B-12 deficiency. The lack of B-12 can result in a decreased oxygen supply in your blood. This makes the heart work harder to pump oxygen since it aids in the formation of red blood cells. This can result in a quicker heart rate or feelings of palpitations. If you notice your heart racing unexpectedly, it’s wise to check if low B-12 could be the cause.

4/6

Pale or yellowing skin

A healthy complexion is often a sign of good nutrition, but pale or yellow skin could signal a deficiency in B-12. Your body finds it difficult to make enough red blood cells when it doesn't have enough vitamin B-12. Anaemia may result from this, giving you a pale complexion. Jaundice, a condition that gives the complexion a faint yellowish colour, can sometimes occur. This happens due to the breakdown of red blood cells, a common issue with severe B-12 deficiency.

5/6

Frequent mouth ulcers

Recurring mouth ulcers are another clue your body could be low in B-12. These painful sores can pop up on your gums or inside your cheeks. A vitamin B-12 deficiency can interfere with normal healing processes and increase the frequency of mouth ulcers. This is because vitamin B-12 is essential for sustaining healthy cell formation.

Feeling colder than others

Do you frequently feel chilly even while everyone else is at ease? A deficiency of vitamin B-12 can be the cause of this. As was previously discussed, anaemia can result from a deficiency of B-12, which lowers the amount of oxygen your blood carries to your cells and organs. Your body may feel cooler than usual as a result of this decline in oxygen levels.
