Worst and best Halloween candy for your health in 2025

Trick or treat? Most children would answer treats! And why not, who doesn't love themselves some free sugar and even more so when it is in the world-adored form of candies and chocolates. With the winter breeze in the air and a slight chill accompanying the Halloween plans, the only sweet thing is the deliciousness of these treats. While there is no one to stop you from enjoying these free and unlimited delectables, did you know some of them can actually be extremely unhealthy for consumption? Below, find five of the worst and best Halloween candies that you can avoid and binge on in 2025.

2/14

5 worst Halloween candies

There are certain candies whose consumption during Halloween could gift you a spooky hospital trip. Not only sugar, these sweet treats pack with them the risks of liver disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and many other chronic diseases. While you cannot completely avoid them, here are 5 you must stop yourself from unwrapping.

3/14

Liquorice

There are many whose childhood sweet dreams on Halloween are made up of chewing on liquorice candies. Made from the root of the plant Glycyrrhiza glabra, the candy contains sugar and gelatine or starch to add the chewy texture everyone loves. Glycyrrhizin, the active ingredient in the candy mimics the effects of adrenal hormones such as cortisol and aldosterone which regulate blood pressure and fluid and electrolyte imbalance. While it relieves indigestion and has anti-inflammatory effects in smaller amounts, when consumed excessively it triggers fluid retention, muscle breakdown and even organ failure.

4/14

Sherbet Dip Dab

One of the best candies is one that has steps in the process of its consumption, such as sherbet Dip Dabs which include a bag of powder and a strawberry lolly for dipping. But the process of making it just includes sugar and citric acid. A 2007 research published in the British Dental Journal found the pH of sour sweets as low as 2.3, intensely acidic. Additionally, another 2005 study published in Caries Research found that sucking on acidic candy dropped the pH of saliva from baseline to acidic. This highlights the erosive potential of such sweets on teeth and stomach lining.

5/14

Crunch Bars

Who would think that the combination of milk chocolate and crisped rice would be unhealthy? According to their official website, three of these mini bars contain 150 calories, 17g of sugars and 8g of fats, making them one of the highest calorie candy bars in your bucket.

6/14

Starburst

Not all fruit-flavoured snacks actually contain fruit. Starburst for instance contains an artificial food colouring known as Red 40 which has recently been banned due to its containing benzidine, a carcinogenic compound that could contribute to cancer formation, as per a 2012 research published in the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health.

7/14

Twix

A Twix bar contains 12g of fat, 25g of sugar and 250 calories per serving, making it one of the most unhealthy bars you could ever binge eat on Halloween. No matter what side you prefer, both seem to be equally bad for your health.
