6 common signs of 'kidney disease' that should never be ignored

What are the signs that should not be ignored

The kidneys, essential for waste removal and fluid balance, are fundamental to overall health. Unfortunately, kidney disease develops with minimal initial symptoms. The ability to recognise and respond to these subtle indicators is crucial. Early detection can significantly impact treatment outcomes and prevent long-term complications. Here are 6 commonly overlooked signs that warrant immediate attention.

2/8

Changes in urination

One of the earliest and most noticeable signs of kidney disease is a change in urination patterns. If you experience any of the following, it’s time to take it seriously:

Urinating more or less frequently than usual, especially at night.
Foamy or bubbly urine, which could indicate protein leakage.
Blood in the urine, making it appear pink or dark.
Difficulty urinating or a weak urine stream.

Since the kidneys are responsible for filtering waste and maintaining fluid balance, any unusual changes in urination could be a red flag.

3/8

Swelling

If your kidneys aren’t functioning properly, excess fluid can accumulate in different parts of the body, leading to swelling. This can be most noticeable in the:

Feet and ankles
Hands
Face, especially around the eyes

Persistent swelling without any obvious reason (like excessive salt intake) could indicate kidney trouble and should be checked by a doctor.

4/8

Fatigue

Do you feel tired all the time, even after getting enough rest? Kidney disease can lead to extreme fatigue due to:

The buildup of toxins in the blood, making you feel sluggish and weak.
Anemia, which is common in kidney disease and reduces oxygen supply to the body.

If you often feel exhausted and low on energy, it might not just be a busy schedule—it could be a sign that your kidneys need attention.

5/8

Itchy skin

Unexplained itching, especially when it becomes persistent or severe, could be a warning sign of kidney disease. When kidneys fail to remove toxins properly, waste builds up in the blood, leading to:
Dry, irritated skin
Intense itching without a rash
Skin changes due to imbalanced minerals

If lotions and creams don’t help, it’s worth considering a kidney function test.

6/8

Loss of appetite and nausea

A reduced appetite and frequent nausea can be linked to kidney disease. This happens when waste products accumulate in the blood, affecting digestion. You may notice:
A metallic taste in the mouth.
Feeling full quickly, even after small meals.
Nausea or vomiting, especially in the morning.

Ignoring these symptoms could lead to unintentional weight loss and nutritional deficiencies.

7/8

Muscle cramps

Frequent muscle cramps, especially in the legs, can be another indicator of kidney disease. This happens due to:
Imbalances in key minerals like calcium, phosphorus, and potassium.
Poor regulation of electrolytes by the kidneys, leading to sudden cramps and muscle pain.

While dehydration can also cause cramps, persistent muscle spasms might suggest an underlying kidney issue.

8/8

When to see a doctor?

These symptoms might not always mean kidney disease, but they shouldn’t be ignored. If you experience one or more of these warning signs, it’s best to consult a doctor for proper diagnosis.
High-risk individuals, such as those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of kidney disease, should get regular kidney function tests. Early detection can help slow the progression of kidney problems and prevent severe complications.(Images: Canva)
