6 things to do if you have high blood sugar level

People suffering from diabetes feel stressed when their readings come high. Sometimes they might know why their readings are high - a piece of cake that they couldn't resist or overload of carbs some day.

However, in some cases, the reading could be high because they are under stress or are about to get a cold. In rare cases, consistent high reading might also mean that the medicines are no longer working and you need to meet your doctor.

When your reading is suddenly high, you should check once again as the machine can also give a false reading in some cases. Because ultimately it's not a single reading but a pattern that matters.

If your reading comes out to be high, don't feel bad or guilty about it. This is because a 2004 study found that blood sugar monitoring in many cases amplifies the feeling of being a failure or success at diabetes. When the readings come out to be consistently high, it can trigger the feeling of self-blame or anxiety.

But all these triggers should not stop you from testing your blood sugar levels. Here are six things you should know about how to lower your blood sugar level when the readings suddenly come out to be too high.

2/7

Test before you eat and also two hours after your meal

Testing this way will tell you exactly if your medication is actually working. This will also help you recognise over a period of time what food is making your blood sugar high. Get a proper diet plan from your doctor and also discuss with him about the frequency and time you should test your blood sugar level.

3/7

Keep an eye on patterns

If one morning your blood sugar readings come out to be too high or too low, it's okay. But if your blood sugar reading is high/low every morning, you need to talk to your doctor.

An isolated high or low reading can be ignored but a consistently high or low reading should be immediately informed to the doctor.

4/7

Make these small changes

If the reading comes high in the morning, you can try and get more exercise and limit carb intake in your next meal. But do not go crazy. As said, look for patterns, one single high reading is not a big deal.

5/7

Pay attention

If your reading comes high, think of what you ate last night. You might have a had a glass of orange juice, which you normally don't. So, next time when your glucometer shows a high reading, try and remember what you had last night. Keep noting down these triggers and avoid them next time.

6/7

Relax

It's not always the food that can trigger your blood sugar level. Sometimes, too much stress or anxiety can also trigger your blood sugar levels. Do not overexert yourself. Stress is bad and we all know that. And if your glucometer is showing a high number, that means its time to relax.

7/7

Talk to your doctor

It could happen that despite eating mindfully and staying relaxed, the reading may still come high. If this is the case, it's time to talk to your doctor. If your number is consistently normal for a long time, even then you should not delay your due appointment.
