Improve hair growth with yoga

Yoga can significantly promote hair growth by enhancing blood circulation to the scalp, reducing stress, and balancing hormones. Poses like Sirsasana (Headstand), Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand), and Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog) increase scalp blood flow, nourishing hair follicles. Forward bends such as Uttanasana improve circulation and relieve tension. Vajrasana with Shashankasana supports digestion and scalp health. Pranayama (breathing exercises) like Bhastrika and Anulom Vilom enhance oxygen supply and reduce stress. Regular practice of these yoga techniques, combined with a healthy diet and proper hair care, can naturally stimulate hair growth.

Here are six traditional yoga practices that can help in hair growth naturally:

2/8

Sirsasana (Headstand)

Sirsasana, or the headstand, is often referred to as the "king of asanas" due to its numerous benefits. It increases blood flow to the scalp, which nourishes the hair follicles and can promote hair growth.

How to perform Sirsasana:

Begin by kneeling on the floor. Interlace your fingers and place your forearms on the ground, creating a stable base.

Place the crown of your head on the ground, cupping the back of your head with your hands.

Straighten your legs and walk your feet closer to your head until your hips are over your shoulders.

Gradually lift your legs off the ground, bringing them to a vertical position. Use core strength to maintain balance.

Hold the position for as long as comfortable, gradually increasing the duration over time.

To come down, slowly lower your legs to the ground in a controlled manner.

3/8

Sarvangasana (Shoulder stand)

Sarvangasana, or the shoulder stand, is another inversion that promotes hair growth by increasing blood flow to the scalp. It also helps in detoxifying the body and balancing the thyroid gland, which is crucial for healthy hair.

How to perform Sarvangasana:

Lie on your back with your arms by your sides.

Lift your legs and hips off the ground, supporting your lower back with your hands.

Straighten your legs and bring them towards the ceiling, ensuring your body is in a straight line.

Keep your elbows close to each other for stability.

Hold the position for 30 seconds to a minute, gradually increasing the duration.

Lower your legs and back to the ground slowly to come out of the pose.

4/8

Uttanasana (Standing forward bend)

Uttanasana, or the standing forward bend, is a simple yet effective pose for improving blood circulation to the scalp. It also helps in relieving stress and tension, which can contribute to hair loss.

How to perform Uttanasana:

Stand with your feet hip-width apart.

Bend forward at the hips, keeping your spine straight.

Allow your head to hang down towards the ground, and place your hands on the floor or hold your ankles.

Keep your knees slightly bent if needed to avoid strain on your lower back.

Hold the position for 30 seconds to a minute, breathing deeply.

To come up, engage your core and slowly rise to a standing position.

5/8

Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-facing dog)

Adho Mukha Svanasana, or the downward-facing dog, is a rejuvenating pose that enhances blood circulation throughout the body, including the scalp. It also helps in relieving tension and promoting relaxation.

How to perform Adho Mukha Svanasana:

Start on your hands and knees, with your wrists aligned under your shoulders and knees under your hips.

Tuck your toes under and lift your hips towards the ceiling, straightening your legs.

Keep your hands shoulder-width apart and feet hip-width apart.

Press your heels towards the ground and extend your spine.

Hold the position for 30 seconds to a minute, breathing deeply.

To release, lower your knees to the ground and rest in Child’s Pose.

6/8

Vajrasana (Thunderbolt pose) with Shashankasana (Rabbit pose)

Vajrasana is a seated pose that aids digestion and promotes overall health, which indirectly supports hair growth. Shashankasana, performed from Vajrasana, directly increases blood flow to the scalp.

How to perform Vajrasana:

Kneel on the floor with your knees together and sit back on your heels.

Keep your spine straight and hands resting on your thighs.

Hold the position for several minutes, focusing on your breath.

How to transition to Shashankasana:

From Vajrasana, extend your arms forward and lower your forehead to the ground, coming into a deep forward bend.

Keep your hips on your heels and arms extended.

Hold the position for 30 seconds to a minute, breathing deeply.

To release, slowly lift your torso back to Vajrasana.

7/8

Pranayama (Breathing exercises)

Pranayama, or controlled breathing exercises, are fundamental in yoga for promoting overall health, reducing stress, and improving circulation. Certain pranayama techniques specifically aid in hair growth.

Bhastrika Pranayama (Bellows Breath):

Sit comfortably in a cross-legged position with your spine straight.

Take a deep breath in through your nose, filling your lungs completely.

Exhale forcefully through your nose, contracting your abdominal muscles.

Continue this rhythmic breathing for 30 seconds to a minute.

Anulom Vilom (Alternate Nostril Breathing):

Sit comfortably with your spine straight.

Close your right nostril with your right thumb and inhale deeply through your left nostril.

Close your left nostril with your right ring finger, release your right nostril, and exhale through the right nostril.

Inhale through the right nostril, close it with your thumb, release the left nostril, and exhale through the left nostril.

Continue this cycle for 5-10 minutes.

8/8

Integrating Yoga into your routine

To maximize the benefits of yoga for hair growth, consider integrating these practices into your daily routine. Here are some tips to help you get started:

Practice these yoga poses and pranayama exercises regularly to see noticeable results. Aim for at least 20-30 minutes of yoga each day. A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is essential for healthy hair growth. Include foods high in protein, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins A, C, and E. Drink plenty of water to keep your scalp and hair hydrated. In addition to yoga, consider other stress-reducing activities like meditation, walking in nature, or listening to calming music. Use gentle, natural hair care products and avoid excessive heat styling or chemical treatments.
