7 common diseases caused by vitamin C deficiency

Vitamin C, is one of the most important compounds that our body needs, and plays a big role in our overall health. When it comes to specific jobs, Vitamin C is crucial in healing wounds, fighting infections, and making collagen, a protein that supports skin, bones, and blood vessels. Vitamin C is largely found in citrus fruits, and its deficiency can cause a host of health issues. We take a look...

2/8

Scurvy

Scurvy is the most common disease caused by vitamin C deficiency, though it is relatively rare now. It usually develops after several months of very low vitamin C intake. Symptoms include tiredness, weakness, bleeding gums, easy bruising, and joint pain. Without treatment, scurvy can cause severe gum disease, tooth loss, and even bleeding inside the body. This happens because vitamin C is needed to make strong collagen, which keeps blood vessels and tissues healthy.

3/8

Anemia

Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron from food. Iron is necessary to make red blood cells that carry oxygen. Without enough vitamin C, iron absorption drops, leading to iron deficiency anemia, which is quite common these days. This causes symptoms like fatigue, pale skin, shortness of breath, and headaches. People with vitamin C deficiency often have anemia because their bodies cannot use iron properly. The condition is fully treatable.

4/8

Poor Wound Healing

Vitamin C is important for making collagen, which helps wounds heal. When vitamin C is low, wounds take much longer to heal. Cuts, bruises, and sores may stay open and painful for a long time. This can increase the risk of infections and other complications.

5/8

Gum Disease (Gingivitis)

Without enough vitamin C, the gums become weak and inflamed. This causes bleeding gums, swelling, and pain. In severe cases, gums may turn purple and rotten, leading to tooth loss. Healthy gums need vitamin C to stay strong and fight bacteria.

6/8

Joint and Bone Problems

Vitamin C deficiency can cause joint pain and swelling due to bleeding inside the joints. It also affects bone health by weakening the collagen that supports bones. This can lead to fragile bones, fractures, and conditions like osteopenia (weakened bones). In children with low vitamin C, they may have delayed bone growth and pain.

7/8

Skin Problems

Low vitamin C causes dry, rough, and scaly skin. A common skin condition called keratosis pilaris, which looks like small bumps or “chicken skin,” can develop. Hair may become dry and split, and small red or purple spots (petechiae) can appear on the skin due to weakened blood vessels. It can also cause nosebleeds.

8/8

Weakened Immune System

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells and supports the immune system. Without enough vitamin C, the body’s ability to fight infections fades over time. People with deficiency are more likely to get sick, and get infections like pneumonia. Severe deficiency can even be fatal, though indirectly.
