Risk of colon cancer

Colon Cancer is one of the most common types of cancer that is increasing at a drastic rate among the younger generation. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research's National Cancer Registry Program, it is the third most common cancer in men and second most common in women. This condition affects the large intestine (colon) and begins as a small clump of noncancerous cell that becomes cancerous with time. In recent times, youngsters are at a higher risk. Some of the risk factors that can increase the risk of colon cancer in young adults include:

2/8

Obesity:

Dr. Amit Javed, Director - Department of Advanced Surgical Sciences & Onco-Surgeries, CK Birla Hospital (R), Delhi says, “Being overweight increases the risk of colon cancer in both men and women. Obesity can cause chronic inflammation in the body and increase insulin resistance, both of which can lead to colon cancer.”

3/8

Family history:

Young adults who have a family history of colon cancer or polyps are at a higher risk of developing this fatal condition. The risk is even higher if any direct relative has developed colon cancer.

4/8

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD):

The chance of developing colon cancer is higher in people with IBD, such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. Chronic digestive tract inflammation caused due to IBD can lead to the development of abnormal and cancerous cells.

5/8

Lack of physical activity:

Young individuals are more inclined towards unhealthy lifestyle choices including lack of physical activity and a sedentary lifestyle. Physical activity or exercise increases antioxidant levels and DNA repair inside the body. It also affects growth factor production and insulin metabolism which reduces inflammation and increases immune function.

6/8

Unhealthy food habits:

Poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption, and red and processed meat can also increase the risk of developing colon cancer.

7/8

Smoking:

According to Dr. Javed, Toxins destroy DNA and mutate healthy cells when the chemicals and pollutants are inhaled in the form of smoking. These chemicals can lead to the growth of precancerous polyps in the large intestine, which can later evolve into cancer.

8/8

Radiation therapy:

There is a higher chance of getting colon cancer in people who have undergone radiation treatment for abdominal cancer. When radiation therapy is administered at a younger age, the risk is greater.
In the majority of the cases, it has been seen that advanced stages of colon cancer are a result of delay in diagnosis and treatment. Apart from following a healthy lifestyle and food habits, it is recommended to get screenings and tests done even before signs and symptoms develop.
