7 times our feet reveal hidden diseases and vitamin deficiencies

How do our feet tell us about our health

Our feet do more than carry us through life, they quietly reflect what’s going on inside our bodies. Sometimes, subtle changes in our feet can be early warning signs of disease or vitamin deficiencies. Here are 7 such signals, easy to miss, but worth paying attention to.

2/11

Tingling or numbness

When your feet feel like they’re buzzing or “pins and needles,” it may not just be fatigue or pressure from shoes. This tingling can be a sign of peripheral neuropathy, often linked to vitamin B12 deficiency. Clinical studies have tied low B12 levels to impaired nerve function. In early stages, these sensations may come and go, but if ignored, nerve damage can worsen.

3/11

Burning feet sensation

A burning or hot-feet feeling is another red flag. Such discomfort can also point to nerve damage caused by deficiencies, especially B12 and, sometimes, B6.
Over time, persistent burning could disrupt sleep and make walking uncomfortable.

4/11

Cracked, dry heels

Deep cracks or very dry skin on your heels may mean more than rough calluses, they can hint at deficiencies in vitamin E, niacin (B3) or vitamin C.
These nutrients help maintain skin hydration and integrity. If such dryness doesn’t improve with moisturisers, a nutritional check might be worthwhile.

5/11

Cold or pale feet

Feet that are chronically cold or have a pale tinge may point to poor circulation or even anemia, often due to low iron or B12.
Reduced oxygen delivery in your blood can make your extremities feel cold long before more obvious symptoms appear.

6/11

Slow-healing cuts or ulcers

If small wounds or blisters on your feet take unusually long to heal, this could be linked to low vitamin C or zinc.
Scientific studies back this: zinc deficiency impairs wound healing, and supplementation has been shown to improve ulcer healing in diabetic feet. Spotting this early might help prevent bigger problems.

7/11

Spider veins or fragile capillaries

Thin, web-like veins (spider veins) on the ankles or feet can be more than cosmetic. They may indicate weakened vascular walls due to insufficient vitamin C (which supports collagen in blood vessels). Low vitamin C reduces the strength and elasticity of veins, making them more visible.

8/11

Brittle or discoloured toenails

Toenails that split, break easily, or develop strange ridges often mirror nutritional gaps. Low zinc, biotin, or iron can make nails thin, soft, or brittle.

Research in dermatology also links deficiencies of Vitamins A, D, and the B-complex to various nail abnormalities. Because nails grow slowly, these changes may surface before other more obvious symptoms.

9/11

Why these signs matter

These are not cosmetic issues. Your feet may be speaking before more serious disease develops. Identifying these signals early leads to simple blood tests, dietary changes, or supplementation, and more importantly, prevention of long-term damage.

10/11

How to respond

Note any persistent signs for a week or more.
Consult a physician or nutritionist if you see two or more of these together.
Get blood work done (B12, iron, zinc, vitamin C, etc.).
Adjust your diet to include nutrient-rich foods (citrus fruits, nuts, greens, whole grains).
Follow-up: if a deficiency is found, treatment at the early stage is usually very effective.
