7 tips to bring down Uric Acid levels in one month

High uric acid levels, known as hyperuricemia, can lead to several health problems, most notably gout and kidney stones. It can be painful, and cause a lot of discomfort. However, the good news is that apart from medication, you can bring down your uric acid naturally as well, through some simple ways. Here are 7 tips to bring your uric acid levels down in a month...

2/15

Drink more water

Drinking lots of water helps flush excess uric acid out of your body through urine. Aim to drink 8 to 16 cups of water daily, depending on how much you move, and the climate around you. You can also include herbal teas and unsweetened fruit juices like lemon water, along with salads and fruits, which help alkalize your body and help in eliminating uric acid.

3/15

Increase your Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps lower uric acid by improving its breakdown and removal from the body. Include fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C such as oranges, lemons, grapefruits, strawberries, kiwi, bell peppers, broccoli, and tomatoes in your daily diet. You can also take some supplements, after consulting your doctor.

4/15

Consume cherries and berries

Cherries and berries contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds called anthocyanins. These help reduce uric acid levels and can even ease inflammation caused by painful gout. You can eat frozen, or fresh cherries, or drink unsweetened cherry juice.

5/15

Stay stress free

Staying stress free is paramount to your health

6/15

Lower your purine consumption

Purines are substances found in many foods that break down into uric acid. To reduce your uric acid, limit high-purine foods such as red meat, shellfish, and certain fish, and pulses. Also, avoid alcohol, especially beer, and foods that are high on sugar. Instead, focus on low-purine foods like whole grains, low-fat dairy, fruits, vegetables and the like.

7/15

Lose weight (if you are overweight)

Excess body weight can increase uric acid production and reduce its elimination. Losing even a small amount of weight can significantly lower uric acid levels. To achieve this, aim for low-to-moderate intensity activities like walking, swimming, or cycling, which improve metabolism without triggering uric acid spikes. Weight management also reduces insulin resistance, which helps prevent uric acid flare-ups.

8/15

Natural remedies

Try these natural remedies to reduce uric acid. Apple cider vinegar and lemon water can alkalize the body and support uric acid removal. Ginger and turmeric, known for their anti-inflammatory properties, can be added to your diet or consumed as teas. Herbal supplements like giloy, triphala, and guggulu can also be beneficial.

12/15

Cut down on alcohol

Alcohol, especially beer, contains high purine levels and can raise uric acid. Sugary drinks and foods with high fructose content also increase uric acid production. Instead, choose water, herbal teas, or moderate amounts of caffeinated coffee, (no more than 2 cups per day) which have been helpful in reducing gout risk.

Healthy eating

Why is high uric acid harmful to the body?

High uric acid is harmful to the body primarily because it can lead to the formation of urate crystals, which can deposit in various tissues and cause significant health problems. The most well-known consequence is gout, an intensely painful form of inflammatory arthritis, often affecting the big toe, caused by these sharp crystals accumulating in joints. Beyond gout, consistently elevated uric acid levels can contribute to kidney damage, including the formation of uric acid kidney stones that obstruct the urinary tract, and can even promote chronic kidney disease by inducing inflammation and fibrosis in the kidney tissue.
