Adrian Chiles' skin cancer diagnosis: How he spotted the symptoms that made all the difference

Veteran broadcaster Adrian Chiles has recently shared a personal and cautionary tale about his encounter with skin cancer, highlighting the importance of vigilance and early detection. In a candid essay for The Guardian, Chiles revealed how a seemingly minor skin growth on his back turned into a serious health concern, ultimately diagnosed as Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

A small patch that could’ve been missed

Adrian Chiles’ skin cancer journey began with what seemed like an inconspicuous spot on his back. Located in a hard-to-see area, the mole-like growth appeared harmless at first, and Chiles, like many of us might, ignored it.
Over time, however, he noticed subtle changes: the patch grew slightly and had a different texture from the surrounding skin. It wasn’t painful, which made it easy to dismiss, but its persistence was a red flag. Eventually, Chiles took the prudent step of photographing the growth and consulting a doctor, something he admits he delayed longer than he should have.
This part of his experience serves as a crucial reminder: skin cancer doesn’t always present with dramatic symptoms.

The wake-up call for Chiles

After finally seeing a dermatologist, Chiles underwent a biopsy, which confirmed the growth was Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), a common type of skin cancer. In Chiles’ case, the lesion was surgically removed, and doctors confirmed it would not spread further.
SCC usually develops in areas exposed to sunlight and is linked to cumulative UV damage over the years. Unlike more aggressive forms like melanoma, early-stage SCC can often be treated with minor surgical procedures, leading to excellent outcomes. Chiles’ experience highlights the importance of early detection and prompt medical intervention, waiting too long or ignoring suspicious patches can allow even relatively slow-growing cancers to advance.

Early detection and prevention

Adrian Chiles’ experience serves as a timely reminder that skin health should never be taken for granted. As per NHS, the key signs of skin cancer to look out for are:
A new growth or skin patch: Any new lump, bump, scab, spot or patch of skin on your body that wasn’t there before.
A growth or patch that changes: This means changes in size, shape, colour, texture or surface over time.
A spot, mole or patch that bleeds, itches, crusts, scabs or doesn’t heal, especially if it persists for several weeks.
Skin cancer often appears on sun‑exposed areas, but it can occur anywhere on the body
