38, including warden and students, have tested COVID positive at a school in UP's Lakhimpur Kheri

A total of 38 people including the warden and students of a school in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri have tested COVID positive and have been quarantined for 7 days.

"Condition of the children is stable"

The condition of the children is stable and the doctors are monitoring them. Only one of the students is symptomatic, Lakhimpur Kheri's chief medical officer Santosh Gupta told TOI.

The CMO also said that ambulances equipped with medicines and oxygen are placed outside the campus where the patients have been quarantined.

"We have sufficient medicines and oxygen supply in the district and the health staff is geared with essential facilities. We are sharing hourly updates with the DM," he told the media.

At present there are 41 COVID positive cases in Lakhimpur Kheri.

COVID and flu cases are rising among children

In the recent COVID cases and the prevalent flu cases a sizable number of infected individuals are kids.

Health experts have warned parents to be extra cautious about their kids.

". Most children are ill with the flu for less than a week. But some children have a more serious illness and may need to be treated in the hospital. The flu may also lead to lung infection (pneumonia) or death," a John Hopkins report says.

In the case of COVID, as seen in the past waves of infection, the symptoms in kids are not as severe as they are in adults. In many cases the children are asymptomatic; in the Lakhimpur Kheri school only one kid is symptomatic.

"Over 60-70 per cent of children who get COVID-19 are asymptomatic — meaning they don’t show any symptoms of the virus at all," UNICEF says.

Key signs parents should take note of

Though severe COVID cases are rarely seen in kids, the infection can occur to anyone of any age. Hence it is imperative to know the common symptoms of COVID seen in kids.

The common signs are:

Fever, body ache, headache, sore throat, cough, weakness, runny nose or congested nose, diarrhea, shortness of breath, and rashes are the common COVID symptoms in kids.

Other signs to look out for

Since COVID and flu viruses are massively circulating in the air one needs to watch out for other signs like nausea, vomiting, high fever, sneezing, hacking cough and other signs related to flu and common cold.

How to prevent kids from getting COVID?

As cases of COVID among kids is increasing, it is very important to follow safety measures that will help kids stay safe from the virus.

The UNICEF urges to encourage kids to "continually wash hands with soap, or use a 70 per cent sanitizer, making sure the whole surface of the hands is covered," wear masks (Children above two years of age can also wear a mask), maintain a physical distance, avoid attending public functions, avoid social gatherings, and avoid group play.

"Discuss, demonstrate, and reiterate the importance of COVID-19 Appropriate Behavior (CAB) with your children," it advises.

COVID cases rise in the country, have the symptoms changed meanwhile?
