'I had vertigo six years back'

Superstar Ayushmann Khurrana, who is known for choosing scripts with social messages, will soon be seen acing an action avatar for his upcoming film An Action Hero. While a hero, especially in an action movie, makes all the stunts and fights feel like a cakewalk for him, Ayushmann opened about his ‘nerve-wracking’ experience, owing to vertigo.

"I had vertigo six years back and my forthcoming film demanded me to jump from high-rise buildings. Though there are harness cables for protection, you still feel anything can happen as you fall down at a great speed. It's a little nerve-wracking," he shared at Aaj Tak's media conclave.

Ayushmann added the methods that helped him heal and feel better.

Ayushmann’s recovery

Consulting your doctor is important. "At first, medication is of the utmost importance, because once you get up, your head starts spinning,” Ayushmann said.

Further, he added how meditation strengthened him from the inside. “And especially in a profession like what we are today, where the script demands us to jump from a tall building, I think meditation helps a lot. If you are really calm inside, then this helps a lot. This is curable, it keeps on coming and going. Inner power is something that people should imply."

Here is everything you need to know about vertigo.

What is vertigo?

Vertigo is more of a symptom than a condition in itself, and could have multiple causes, depending on person to person. At its core, it is a sensation of feeling off balance or dizzy, like you are spinning or the world around you is spinning.

The intensity of this feeling can also vary, from negligible to severe. Vertigo attacks can develop suddenly and last for a few seconds, or may last much longer. Severe vertigo can interrupt one's day to day activities.

What causes vertigo?

Vertigo is often caused by an inner ear problem. BPPV – benign paroxysmal positional vertigo – can also lead to vertigo. It happens when tiny calcium particles are dislodged from their normal location and collect in the inner ear.

Inner ear infection can also lead to vertigo. Inflammation of the vestibular nerve (runs into the inner ear and sends messages to the brain to control balance) can also cause signs associated with vertigo.

Symptoms of vertigo

Vertigo can be experienced in multiple, similar ways by different people. It includes feelings such as spinning, tilting, and/or swaying. People may also feel unbalanced or as if they are being pulled to one direction.

Along with experiencing vertigo, patients may have other symptoms too, such as feeling nauseated, experiencing vomiting and abnormal or jerking eye movements. Other signs include headache, sweating and ringing in the ears or hearing loss.

What is the prescribed treatment?

It is best to consult your doctor if you experience any of the above mentioned symptoms. The treatment options depend on the symptoms patients are experiencing. For example, antibiotics are prescribed to people who suffer from vertigo because of an infection.

People whose condition is triggered due to head movements are recommended certain exercises by doctors. Antihistamines may also be prescribed to reduce the symptoms of vertigo.
