Bad gut health, indigestion can lead to skin disease psoriasis

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a long-lasting skin condition that impacts millions of people across the globe. It is recognized by its red, scaly patches on the skin, which can lead to both physical discomfort and emotional distress. These patches, referred to as plaques, can manifest anywhere on the body but are most frequently observed on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back.

Here’s what the expert says

Dr. Aayush Gupta, Associate Professor and Consultant Dermatologist, DPU Private Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri, Pune says, “The seriousness of psoriasis varies from person to person, with some encountering infrequent mild outbreaks while others contend with continuous and extensive coverage. This range in severity underscores the necessity for a thorough comprehension of the condition and its treatment. Despite the substantial role that genetics and environmental factors play in its formation, recent research has illuminated a fascinating correlation between gut health and psoriasis.”

Factors contributing to psoriasis and the gut health link

Psoriasis is a complex condition influenced by a combination of genetic, immune, and environmental factors. Recent investigations have revealed a fascinating connection between gut health and the onset or exacerbation of psoriasis. The gut microbiome, a diverse community of microorganisms residing in the digestive tract, plays a pivotal role in maintaining overall health. When the balance of this microbiome is disrupted, it can have far-reaching effects on various bodily systems, including the immune system.

Gut health linked to psoriasis

The relative proportion of specific gut bacteria have been linked to psoriasis severity. For instance, an overgrowth of certain bacteria can produce inflammatory compounds that exacerbate skin symptoms. Conversely, a healthy gut microbiome supports immune balance and helps regulate inflammation, potentially reducing psoriasis flare-ups. While the exact mechanisms are still being studied, these findings underscore the importance of maintaining gut health as a preventive measure against psoriasis.

What’s the gut-skin axis?

According to Dr. Gupta, “The gut-skin axis, a bidirectional communication system between the gut and skin, has gained attention for its potential influence on psoriasis. Research suggests that an imbalance in the gut microbiome, known as dysbiosis, can trigger inflammation and immune responses that contribute to psoriasis development. In individuals with psoriasis, there appears to be an increased permeability of the gut lining, allowing harmful substances to enter the bloodstream. This process, often referred to as "leaky gut," can trigger immune responses that ultimately lead to skin inflammation and the characteristic plaques seen in psoriasis.”

Precautionary actions for skin health

While genetics plays a significant role in psoriasis risk, there are several precautionary actions individuals can take to promote skin health and potentially reduce the risk of developing psoriasis:
Balanced diet
Probiotics and prebiotics
Hydration
Stress management
Consult a dermatologist
