Beware! Doctors say only 5% of cancers are genetic, here's what to do to reduce your risk

Even though cancer treatment has made huge advancements in recent years, science still falls short of a 'complete cure', especially since cancer does not follow any single pattern, and can progress rapidly from one organ to another. While it was largely belived that cancer can be genetic, the fact of the matter is that only 5% of cancers are genetic, and the rest boils down to quality of life, lifestyle choices etc. Here are a few doctor approved ways you can reduce your cancer risk.

2/6

Lower your Insulin and Cortisol

Chronic stress raises cortisol, a hormone that can increase inflammation and weaken your immune system, while high insulin levels from poor diet can promote cancer growth. Managing stress through relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or yoga helps keep cortisol levels in check. Eating balanced meals with plenty of vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats stabilizes blood sugar and insulin levels, reducing cancer-promoting inflammation. Avoiding fast food and sugary snacks also supports this balance by preventing insulin spikes.

3/6

Consume an Anti-Inflammatory Diet

Chronic inflammation is linked to cancer development because it damages cells and encourages abnormal growth. To fight inflammation, focus on whole, unprocessed foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, fish, and olive oil. Avoid ultra-processed foods such as packaged snacks, sugary cereals, processed meats, and fast food, which are high in added sugars, unhealthy fats, and salt-all of which promote inflammation and increase cancer risk. Including anti-inflammatory herbs and spices like turmeric, ginger, and cinnamon can further protect your cells.

4/6

Move your body

Regular physical activity lowers cancer risk by helping maintain a healthy weight, reducing inflammation, and improving immune function. Even light daily activities such as walking, gardening, or household chores can significantly cut cancer risk. Research shows that people who take more steps daily have a lower chance of developing cancer, regardless of the intensity of the activity. Spending time outdoors also boosts vitamin D levels, which supports immune health and may offer additional protection against some cancers.

5/6

Strengthen your immunity

A strong immune system helps your body detect and destroy abnormal cells before they develop into cancer. Certain herbs have been shown to boost immunity and have anti-cancer properties. Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that may help prevent cancer cell growth. Green tea is rich in antioxidants called catechins, which protect cells from damage. Astragalus, a traditional herb, supports immune function and may improve the body’s ability to fight cancer. Including these herbs in your diet or as supplements can enhance your body’s natural defenses.

6/6

Tackle hidden infections

Environmental toxins and contaminated water can increase cancer risk. Drinking water may contain harmful substances like arsenic or by-products from chlorination, which have been linked to cancers of the bladder, liver, and other organs. Using a good water filter reduces exposure to these carcinogens. Additionally, minimizing contact with toxins such as pesticides, tobacco smoke, and industrial chemicals lowers your overall cancer risk. Hidden infections, such as certain viruses or bacteria, can also contribute to cancer development, so it’s important to seek medical advice if you suspect any chronic infections.
