Understanding the early warning signs can help you get medical care before complications happen

A blood clot in the leg, also called deep vein thrombosis (DVT), is a serious health condition that needs quick attention. Many people search online for blood clots in leg symptoms because they feel unusual pain, swelling, or warmth and want to know if it could be dangerous.

2/11

What is a blood clot in the leg?

A blood clot in the leg forms when blood thickens and clumps together in a deep vein, usually in the calf or thigh. This is known as deep vein thrombosis. If left untreated, the clot can break loose and travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism, which can be life-threatening.

DVT requires prompt medical attention: US CDC

If you have symptoms, seek medical care immediately. Finding and treating these conditions early can prevent death and complications. Blood clots are usually treated using medicines or devices that dissolve, break up, remove, or capture the clot. Usually, medicines are taken for several weeks or months to prevent more clots from forming and to give the body a chance to dissolve or heal existing clots, the US CDC says.
Not everyone has the same symptoms. Some people have mild signs, while others feel sudden and severe discomfort. Below are the most common DVT symptoms people notice.

4/11

Leg pain or tenderness

Pain often starts in the calf
Feels like cramping, aching, or soreness
May get worse when standing or walking
Usually affects one leg, not both
This pain is often confused with a muscle strain, which is why blood clots can be missed.

5/11

Swelling in one leg

Sudden or gradual swelling
One leg looks larger than the other
Shoes or pants may feel tighter on one side
Swelling is one of the most common blood clot in leg symptoms and should not be ignored.

6/11

Warmth in the affected area

The skin over the clot may feel warmer than the surrounding area
Warmth is usually limited to one leg
This warmth happens because of inflammation around the clot.

7/11

Red or discolored skin

Skin may look red, bluish, or darker than usual
Color changes often appear near the calf or thigh
If skin color changes come with pain or swelling, it may point to deep vein thrombosis.

8/11

Leg heaviness or tightness

A heavy or tight feeling in the leg
May feel like pressure that doesn’t go away with rest
This symptom can be subtle but is common in early stages.

9/11

Less common symptoms of a blood clot

Some people experience symptoms that are easy to overlook, such as:
Mild throbbing in the leg
Veins that look more visible than usual
Discomfort that comes and goes
Even mild symptoms can become serious if ignored.

10/11

Call emergency services immediately if leg symptoms are followed by:

Shortness of breath
Chest pain
Coughing up blood
Rapid heartbeat
These may be signs the clot has moved to the lungs.

11/11

Who is at higher risk for blood clots?

You may have a higher risk of DVT if you:
Sit for long periods (travel, desk jobs)
Recently had surgery or injury
Are pregnant or recently gave birth
Smoke
Use hormone therapy or birth control
Have a family history of blood clots
Knowing your risk can help you act faster if symptoms appear.
