Breast Cancer Awareness Month: 5 signs of breast cancer seen in the underarms that are mostly ignored by women

Signs of breast cancer that most women miss

Every October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month reminds the world about early detection and timely care. While most people think breast cancer signs show only in the breasts, the truth is that the underarm area can also whisper early warnings. Since lymph nodes are present in the armpits, they react first when something unusual is happening in the body. Unfortunately, many women brush these signs aside as ageing, skin irritation, or even a minor infection. Paying attention to these little changes can make a big difference.

2/7

Persistent lump in the underarm

A firm lump under the arm is often the first and most noticeable sign. Unlike soft lumps that may come and go due to infections or hormonal changes, cancer-related lumps are usually hard, painless, and remain for weeks. Many women mistake these for swollen glands from shaving cuts or minor infections, but doctors highlight that underarm lumps linked to breast cancer feel different and deserve a check-up.

3/7

Thickening or swelling in the armpit area

Sometimes there is no clear lump, but a swelling or thickened patch can be felt. This may feel like a “fullness” under the arm. Such thickening is often ignored, especially if there is no pain. But swollen lymph nodes can signal the body is fighting more than a common infection. In some cases, this change appears before anything is noticeable in the breast itself.

4/7

Unexplained tenderness or pain

Armpit pain is usually linked to muscle strain, deodorant reactions, or even tight clothing. However, when tenderness is constant and cannot be explained by these reasons, it could indicate changes in lymph nodes due to cancer spread. Breast cancer-related discomfort is subtle and often described as a dull ache rather than sharp pain.

5/7

Redness or skin texture changes under the arm

The underarm skin is sensitive and prone to rashes, especially in warm climates. But persistent redness, dimpling, or changes that resemble the skin of an orange (called “peau d’orange”) should not be overlooked. These changes may signal blocked lymph vessels due to cancer. Women often dismiss this as a heat rash or irritation from hair removal, delaying timely checks.

6/7

Unusual warmth or heaviness

Some women report a feeling of warmth, heaviness, or even a slight burning sensation in one underarm. This subtle sign is easy to miss or confuse with muscle fatigue. Experts say such sensations may occur when lymph nodes are inflamed or when inflammatory breast cancer is present, which spreads quickly if not addressed early.
