Cancer myths are as harmful as the disease is: Misconceptions that delay diagnosis, treatment

Cancer is preventable if the symptoms are treated at an early stage

As per a recent study, a total of 124·3 million cancer deaths were preventable; this comprises 68% and 58·5 million cases were treatable. The study obtained data from 185 countries and 36 cancer types. "A global total of 5·28 million deaths from cancer occurred prematurely in 2020, of which 3·63 million were preventable and 1·65 million were treatable," the researchers found. "When presented by sex, lung and liver cancer contributed the largest to preventable cancers in men and in women, lung cancer ranked first among the major preventable cancers in countries with high human development index (HDI) and cervical cancer led in medium to low HDI countries," they also found.

Denial of scientific facts

Even to this day, many people believe cancer is of supernatural origin. A study conducted in rural Tamil Nadu has shed light on the myths, beliefs, and attitudes toward cancer among the family caregivers of cancer patients. The participants were selected from the caregivers of cancer patients from Cuddalore and Villupuram districts of Tamil Nadu. "The major myth identified regarding the causation of cancer was that it was contagious or of infective origin. Two of the participants expressed their fear about the transmission of cancer to their family members from the patient. The second major common belief they expressed about the cause of cancer was that it was of supernatural origin," the study found.

Some mythical beliefs about cancer

Different myths were believed in association with cancer. "I have heard from my neighbors that cancer spreads. I think it does spread", "We have children in our house, I am afraid it might spread to them", "Yes, I think it is due to God’s curse. I am thinking why God has cursed us so", were a few of the responses. "My relatives said that herbal medicine is good, that is why we went there first. But it didn’t do any good, that’s why we came to the hospital" was among the other false beliefs about cancer and its treatment.
4/9

Myths favor the disease, not the patient

Myths and misinformation are harmful as they delay the initiation of the treatment process and give sufficient time to the disease to progress. By the time the patient reaches the hospital, the disease reaches an advanced and irreversible stage.

5/9

“Biopsy can spread the cancer cells”

Many people do not get a biopsy done, because they fear it might spread the cancerous cells to different parts of the body. Read this to get more information on this. You can always ask your doctor for even the slightest information on this matter.

6/9

"I don’t smoke or drink; I won’t have cancer"

Many people believe that living a healthy lifestyle prevents cancer. However, the fact is far from the truth. Lung cancer is often associated with smoking, but non-smokers can also develop it due to other risk factors like exposure to radon gas or secondhand smoke. Anyone can be at risk for lung cancer.

7/9

"If I feel fine, I don't have cancer"

Some cancers can be present without causing any noticeable symptoms. Not all cancers exhibit early symptoms, and some may be asymptomatic in their initial stages. Relying solely on noticeable symptoms can lead to late-stage diagnosis.

Regular screenings and check-ups are essential for detecting cancer at an early, treatable stage, even if you feel healthy.

8/9

"Cancer can be cured with alternative therapies"

Some people believe that alternative treatments like herbal remedies or dietary changes can cure cancer without conventional medical intervention. Delaying or avoiding evidence-based treatments can be life-threatening. It is advisable to consult a doctor to know the growth of the disease and take necessary medically relevant methods.

9/9

"If I don't have a family history of cancer, I'm safe"

Family history is just one of many risk factors for cancer. Most cancer cases occur in individuals with no family history of the disease. Regular screenings and a healthy lifestyle are crucial for everyone, regardless of family history.
