We care so much about cholesterol that we believe everything we are told about it!

Everyone dreads cholesterol! High cholesterol level is a big risk factor for heart complications and what makes it even scarier is the fact that the signs associated with it are subtle. By the time a person starts feeling the damaging effects of high cholesterol, the disease has either progressed to an advanced stage or is at a stage where it is difficult to bring it back to normal. It is imperative to know the facts about cholesterol and discard the myths. Here we will discuss the common myths related to cholesterol, which are so convincing that people consider them to be true.

Cholesterol is always bad for human health

No, it is not. High cholesterol is bad. Cholesterol, at its normal level, is essential for several bodily functions. From fetal development to cell functioning, cholesterol plays a key role in major body functions. The amount of cholesterol that your body needs comes from the food you eat and from your liver.

'Good' cholesterol is always good for the body

Good cholesterol or high-density lipoprotein (HDL) is considered to be good for human health and changes in it are ignored. The fact is low levels of HDL are not good and efforts should be made to increase its levels in the body. People who have metabolic issues like obesity, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar levels have lower levels of HDL cholesterol.

You are young, no need to get your cholesterol checked

This behavior towards cholesterol needs to change. Blood cholesterol needs to be monitored on a regular basis from as early as the 20s. The incidence of heart complications in younger people, these days, is one of the main reasons why young adults should not hesitate to monitor their cholesterol level, which they consider an age-related problem.

Triglycerides do not matter

Triglycerides do matter and an elevated level of this cholesterol component should not be ignored. The basic understanding of cholesterol is that LDL or low-density lipoprotein is the bad one. However, the science behind the cholesterol components is far more complex. High triglyceride levels increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and pancreatitis.

6/7

If the cholesterol is low, you will not develop heart complications

No, low cholesterol does not mean your heart is completely safe; it means one of the risk factors of the heart is less in your body but you need to take care of other risk factors. Heart-friendly habits like physical activity, low salt consumption, less sugar intake, and nutrient-loaded food are essential to keep the heart healthy.

Early signs of colon cancer which seem subtle but are warning signs to visit a doctor

7/7

Cholesterol can be managed without medicines

No, do not underestimate the power of medicine and the role of a doctor in cholesterol management. While modifying lifestyle habits do have a contributory role in cholesterol management, they do not address every risk factor and cause of cholesterol. Lowering cholesterol needs a wholesome strategy that needs medicines and lifestyle changes.
