A new-born’s arrival is a joyful and exciting event of great magnitude

Nevertheless, the festivities are accompanied by obligations to protect the new baby's delicate health. Because newborns are especially prone to infections, parents should be proactive in preventing infections and should be well-informed about common diseases. Examining common illnesses and providing advice on how parents might protect their newborns from these possible risks.

2/7

Preterm birth/low birth weight

40% of newborns in India weigh less than 2.5 kg, making premature delivery and low birth weight serious problems for the health of the newborn. Premature newborns require specialised care in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) because to their difficulty regulating body temperature, nursing challenges, and a higher risk of jaundice. In India, 15% of babies are born before their due date, highlighting the significance of providing specialised care for this vulnerable population.
Prevention: Adequate prenatal care is pivotal in mitigating the risks associated with preterm birth and low birth weight. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy, seeking prompt medical attention for signs of preterm labor, and fostering awareness can contribute to a healthier start for newborns.

3/7

Infections

Newborns possess underdeveloped immune systems, rendering them susceptible to infections. Maintaining a clean and hygienic environment is paramount to preventing infections caused by germs present on hands and clothes. Pneumonia, blood infections, and brain infections are common and may necessitate NICU admission.
Prevention: Rigorous handwashing, ensuring the cleanliness of the baby's surroundings, and minimizing exposure to individuals with illnesses can significantly reduce the risk of infections in newborns.

4/7

Jaundice

Jaundice is a widespread concern among newborns globally, often stemming from immature liver function, known as physiological jaundice. While most cases are mild and self-resolving, infants born to mothers with negative blood groups may experience more severe jaundice due to blood group incompatibility.
Prevention: Monitoring and managing jaundice, particularly in cases of blood group incompatibility, may involve phototherapy. Prenatal screening, coupled with timely medical intervention, can help anticipate and address potential complications.

5/7

Difficulty in breathing (Respiratory Distress Syndrome)

Some newborns encounter breathing difficulties due to decreased surfactant levels in their lungs, a condition termed Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS). Babies with RDS may require ventilator support.
Prevention: While RDS cannot always be averted, comprehensive prenatal care and awareness of risk factors can contribute to early detection and management.

6/7

Birth defects (Congenital disorders)

Approximately 3-5% of newborns are born with congenital disorders, often involving the heart and brain. Many of these anomalies can be identified through prenatal screenings, although not all conditions are detectable before birth.
Prevention: Regular prenatal check-ups, including sonography, play a crucial role in identifying and preparing for congenital disorders. Early detection facilitates timely medical interventions and specialized care in the NICU.

7/7

Being aware of the sensitive area of newborn health and taking preventative action are necessary

Parents may take charge of their own health by learning about common illnesses that affect newborns and putting preventative measures in place. Regular check-ups, strict sanitation, and timely medical treatment are all ways that parents may greatly enhance their darling new-borns’ resiliency and general well-being as they set out on their life's journey.
