Should you go to the or not?

It has only been a few months when gyms and fitness classes reopened after months of lockdown imposed due to COVID-19. Easing of the restrictions was nothing less a treat for gym-goers who struggled to keep up their fitness routine at home for more than one year in the wake of the pandemic. Now that the emergence of the omicron variant is again leading to a surge in cases of coronavirus across the globe, it is obvious to wonder if it is alright to continue going to the gym.

The spike in the omicron cases

After months of respite, coronavirus cases have again started to surge. The new Omicron variant that originated in South Africa has raised many questions on the effectiveness of the vaccination and the possibility of a COVID-19 third wave. Although omicron is believed to cause minor symptoms, it is very transmissible. In India area alone, 200 cases of omicron have been detected till now, which has sparked the issues of lockdown and imposing restrictions. Till now no formal announcement has been made by the government, but at our end, we must try to stay safe and cut down the risk of infection.

Is it safe to go to the gym?

With the lingering fear of the omicron variant, it is best to work out at home, than go to the gym. Omicron is three times more transmissible than the Delta variant, so naturally, it has the tendency to affect a larger group of population. Besides, in winters the risk of infection is higher because a drop in the temperature outdoors makes the indoor air dry and humid, which in turn irritates and dries out our mucous membranes making us more susceptible to infections. Also, there is a double threat in winter in the form of cold and flu. COVID accompanied by flu or cold can worsen the situation and lead to serious symptoms. The gym is an enclosed space, so the chances of transmission of the virus are the highest. On top of that, when exercising most people do not put on their masks and can easily spread the infection to others.

What is the alternative?

To stay fit is it not necessary to hit the gym. Getting in shape is all about dedication and consistency. During the lockdown, we all learned to stay fit and exercise at home, it is best to continue the same for the time being. You can perform bodyweight exercises, yoga, stretching and skipping rope at home. If the air quality in your area is good then you can also try walking, running and cycling. Visiting busy and enclosed spaces like the gym at this time when a new variant is spreading its claws and there is not much information available about the effectiveness of vaccines is like inviting trouble.

What can you do to stay safe?

With the holiday season around the corner, it might be difficult for many to confine themselves at home and avoid outdoor events. But this is the only way to reduce the risk of the third wave. Data suggests that a possible third wave due to the omicron variant can infect more people than the second wave. Let alone the gym, for some time it is better to avoid all crowded places like restaurants, events, movie theaters. The risk of infection is higher in a poorly ventilated area. Wear your mask all the time, follow proper hygiene habits and take precautions when you witness any symptoms of COVID-19.
