Coronavirus vaccine: Symptoms of blood clots to watch out post-vaccination

Side effects of blood clotting

Experiencing some side effects after getting the COVID-19 jab is quite normal. These side effects are indications that the vaccine is doing its job of making antibodies. But the vaccine aftereffects need to be closely watched as not all of them may be normal and may indicate a serious health threat. In rare cases taking the shot may lead to a blood clot in different parts of the body, which may travel to the heart leading to a heart attack or stroke. Last month, the Union Health Ministry released an advisory clearly stating the symptoms of the blood clot to watch out for after taking vaccination against COVID-19.

What is blood clotting?

Blood clotting is a clump of cells and protein, which changes the blood from a liquid to a gel-like or semi-solid state. In the case of injury, clotting is life-saving as it helps to stop bleeding. It is problematic when it is formed inside the vessel without any reason. Blood clotting isn't harmful when it is immobile, but if it breaks free and travels to organs like the heart and lungs, it can prevent blood flow, leading to stroke and respiratory issues. Here is the list of symptoms of blood clotting to watch out for.

Breathlessness and pain in the chest

Pulmonary embolism is one of the most common types of thrombotic attack, which has also been associated with vaccines. It happens when the clot travels back to the lungs and restricts vital blood flow. While embolism may be worrisome if left undiagnosed, one of the earliest signs of the problem may arise in the form of breathlessness, or make one experience chest pain. Coughing up blood can also be a symptom.

4/8

Pain in limbs

Blood clotting can also happen in the lower legs and arms. This may lead to possible symptoms like sudden pain in the limbs, swelling, tenderness and reddish discolouration. Pin-sized reddish marks may also be seen.

5/8

Skin rashes

In the case of blood clotting, your veins or legs may look bluish or reddish. The skin where the clot is present may also be discoloured from the damage to blood vessels.

6/8

Abdominal pain

It should be noted that gastrointestinal symptoms aren't classified as typical post-vaccination symptoms. However, experiencing unusual stomach pain may be a cause of concern if you have just got the jab. Some experts also suggest that people can experience shooting pain in the abdomen, or chronic nausea if they develop a blood clot in the abdomen. However, do remember that this can only be confirmed after clinical diagnosis.

7/8

Headache and blurred vision

A clot can also possibly formed in the brain, which is known as a stroke. Some of the common ways a stroke can be diagnosed are by observing symptoms like sudden difficulty in speaking, weakness, blurred vision, delirium and a debilitating headache. In extreme cases, the clot can also obstruct blood flowing to the veins and reduce oxygen flow, which can turn fatal as well.

When to consult doctors?

While blood clots are seen in some of the cases post-vaccination right now, do remember that blood clots can be treated well if diagnosed early. Experts also believe that the risk of severe blood clotting and thrombotic disorders is greater with an actual COVID- infection. So, do not hesitate to get vaccinated.

If you experience unusual symptoms in the first 20 days post-vaccination or have a heightened risk of clotting, be extremely careful and approach medical help. Recognizing early signs and symptoms can help you take prompt action.
