COVID in Delhi: 24 cases of JN.1 reported, here are the other variants circulating
On one hand winter is almost at its peak in Delhi, on the other hand, the number of COVID cases, especially those caused by the new JN.1 variant has climbed to 24 in a few weeks. So far, 24 cases of the COVID JN.1 variant have been detected in the national capital. Delhi had reported its first case of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 in December last year. " The national capital has so far reported 24 cases of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1, including three patients who were from outside Delhi, with all of them recovering from the infection," officials told news agency, PTI on Monday.
"The first patient of JN.1 sub-variant had got admitted to a hospital since she was stressed but recovered within a few days. The remaining patients have also recovered. Three of the patients who are from outside Delhi were detected with Covid during pre-operative screening. What we have learnt so far is that majority of the patients have recovered in home isolation," PTI reported citing an official.
Until now mild symptoms are being seen in patients and the patients are recovering within two to three days.
The classic symptoms of COVID are fever, headache, body pain, fatigue, sneezing, sore throat, cough, loss of smell, vomiting and shortness of breath.
Apart from JN.1 variant, the other variants that are circulating in Delhi are BA.2, XBB.2.3, HV.1 and HK.3. According to the recent reports of genome sequencing received, out of 29 samples that were sequenced, six had low genome coverage, the officials said. Out of the 23 samples that passed the genome sequencing tests, eight were detected with the JN.1 variant, 11 were found with BA.2 while one sample each was found with the XBB.2.3 and HV.1 variant and two with HK.3

The HV.1 variant has been circulating in the US and is currently a dominant strain there along with JN.1. "The HV.1 variant has been circulating in the U.S. since late summer. It descended directly from EG.5, aka Eris, and is very similar to its parental strain. In October, HV.1 quickly overtook other variants, including EG.5 and XBB.1.16 or Arcturus, to become the leading variant in the country," TODAY reported. HV.1 was overtaken by JN.1 in December.
BA.2 was a dominant strain of the coronavirus in 2022. One of the sublineages of the Omicron, BA.2 caught global attention in the early 2022. "At a global level, the proportion of reported sequences designated BA.2 has been increasing relative to BA.1 in recent weeks," the World Health Organisation had said in a statement.
HK.3 is a sublineage of EG.5 variant. HK.3 or XBB.1.9.2.5.1.1.3 was initially discovered in East Asia.
