'Dangal' actor Suhani Bhatnagar succumbs to dermatomyositis: Know about this rare condition

Suhani Bhatnagar who played the young Babita Phogat, in the 'Dangal' movie has succumbed to a rare health condition called dermatomyositis, her family has confirmed. She was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences on February 7 and died on February 16 after medical complications. Suhani was 19 years old.

Suhani became a popular name in the entertainment industry after giving a flawless and impeccable performance in the 2016 movie, especially the song 'Haanikarak Bapu'. She played the sister of Zaira Wasim, the young Geeta Phogat. Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra played the grown-up versions of the characters. Aamir Khan played the role of their father, Mahavir Phogat.

Dermatomyositis is a rare condition

Dermatomyositis is a rare autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation of the skin and muscles. It manifests with distinctive skin rashes, often accompanied by muscle weakness and pain. The exact cause is unknown, but it's thought to involve a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental triggers. Dermatomyositis can affect people of any age, but it's most common in adults between 40 and 60 years old and children between 5 and 15. Treatment typically involves a combination of medications to suppress inflammation, physical therapy to maintain muscle strength and function, and sometimes immunosuppressive therapy to manage the autoimmune response. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing symptoms and preventing complications.

"She developed a red spot on her hands about two months ago. We thought it was allergy and we consulted with doctors in different hospitals in Faridabad but it couldn't be diagnosed. "When her condition started deteriorating, we got her admitted to AIIMS. But there was no improvement and her lungs were damaged due to accumulation of excess fluid," her father told reporters.


Dermatomyositis presents a range of symptoms affecting the skin and muscles. Common skin manifestations include a distinctive rash, typically on the face, eyelids, knuckles, and elbows, often described as a reddish or purplish discoloration. Other symptoms may include skin sensitivity to sun exposure, a characteristic rash on the upper eyelids called heliotrope rash, and ragged cuticles or nail fold changes known as Gottron's papules. Muscle weakness and pain, particularly in the proximal muscles such as those around the shoulders and hips, are hallmark muscle symptoms. Additional symptoms can include fatigue, difficulty swallowing, and joint pain. Early recognition and treatment are essential for managing symptoms and preventing complications.

Aamir Khan production has condoled the death of the young talent. "We are deeply saddened to hear about our Suhani passing away. Our heartfelt condolences to her mother Poojaji and the entire family. Such a talented young girl, such a team player, 'Dangal' would have been incomplete without Suhani. Suhani, you will always remain a star in our hearts. May you rest in peace," Aamir Khan Productions said in the post on X.
