What is pancreatic cancer?

Pancreatic cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the pancreas start to divide and grow in an uncontrolled way, and form a growth (tumour). This is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. In 2022, more than 500,000 people were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, leading to almost 470,000 deaths globally. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is the sixth most common cause of cancer death worldwide, with the least favourable prognosis.

What are the symptoms of pancreatic cancer?

Pancreatic cancers often do not cause any signs or symptoms in the early stages, according to the American Cancer Society. By the time they do cause symptoms, the cancer often grows very large or has already spread outside the pancreas. This is why pancreatic cancer is often called a ‘silent killer’. The symptoms also vary depending on where the cancer is in the pancreas. It can develop in the head, body, or tail of the pancreas.

Common symptoms of pancreatic cancer include:

5/10

Chronic fatigue and lack of energy

People with pancreatic cancer experience lack of energy or physical weakness without any physical exertion. This symptom often gets ignored as general tiredness

6/10

Jaundice

One of the crucial signs of pancreatic cancer is jaundice, where the whites of the eyes or skin turn yellow. One may experience itchy skin, darker urine, and light-colored or greasy stools.

7/10

Belly pain

Another warning sign of pancreatic cancer is pain in the abdomen or back. This sign should not be ignored.

8/10

Poor appetite and weight loss

Unintended weight loss is very common in people with pancreatic cancer. Such people also experience a reduced or no appetite.

9/10

Nausea and vomiting

When this cancer presses the far end of the stomach, it can partly block, making it hard for food to get through. This may lead to nausea, vomiting, and pain.
