Dengue cases in Delhi reach 5-year-high says report; 5 early signs and preventive measures to know

​Delhi records the highest number of dengue cases since 2018​


As a total of 187 cases were reported in the national capital till July 22, authorities have started preparedness to tackle this viral infection as this is the highest number of infections reported in the last 5 years, reports have said. "We have given instructions to the Health Department and DIP to run a campaign regarding Dengue in schools and among common people. Hospitals will be made ready for dengue cases. I also had a discussion with MCD Commissioner regarding the same today," Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj told news agency ANI.

​"Early detection of the infection is crucial for effective management and treatment"​


"Dengue is a viral infection transmitted primarily by the Aedes mosquito. In India, dengue is a significant health concern, particularly during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons when mosquito breeding is more prevalent. Early detection of dengue is crucial for effective management and treatment," Dr. Santosh Kumar Aggarwal, Sr Consultant - Internal Medicine, Marengo Asia Hospitals, Faridabad.

​Early signs and symptoms of dengue​


"The common signs and symptoms of dengue are sudden high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, skin rash, mild bleeding, and fatigue," Dr. Aggarwal explains.

​In dengue fever can go up to 104°F​


"One of the most prominent symptoms of dengue is a sudden onset of high fever, often reaching 104°F (40°C) or even higher," Dr. Aggarwal explains and goes on to explain the other symptoms of the viral infection cases of which are soaring across the country.

​Dengue associated headache feels like discomfort behind the eyes​


Dengue patients experience intense headache which feels like pain and discomfort in the eyes, especially when moving them, says Dr Aggarwal and adds that the pain is usually centered behind the eyes and this is a common sign of infection people should be careful about.

​Bone breaking fever​


Dengue is often nicknamed as "breakbone fever" because of the immense pain in the muscle and joint pains. This is associated with nausea, vomiting, and uneasiness in the stomach, explains Dr Aggarwal.

​Other signs to take note of​


Dr Aggarwal urges people to take note of other signs of the infection like mild skin rash, mild bleeding from the nose or gums, significant fatigue and weakness which impacts daily activities. "It is crucial to remember that the symptoms mentioned above can be associated with various other illnesses as well. If you or someone you know experiences these symptoms, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly, especially in areas where dengue is prevalent. Early diagnosis and appropriate management can prevent complications and aid in a faster recovery," the expert concludes.

​Some preventive measures to follow​


In view of the growing number of cases of dengue in the country, here are a few preventive steps to follow. Use insect repellent, wear clothes with long sleeves, and wear long pants. If your place is swarming with mosquitoes or if there are any cases of dengue found nearby, follow mosquito control methods. Do not let water inside tires, buckets, planters, toys, pools, birdbaths, flowerpots, or garbage containers.
