10 warning signs of hidden inflammation

While chronic inflammation is often silent, but did you know it is often the root cause of fatigue, slow metabolism, hormonal changes in the body, and even premature aging? Highlighting this, Dr Sudhanshu Rai-- Metabolic doctor & Sports Physio, revealed 10 warning signs of hidden inflammation in one's body people in a recent social media post. "If you relate to three or more of these signs, your body might be under internal stress. Start fixing it by cleaning up your diet (less sugar, refined oils), prioritizing sleep, and managing daily stress," he further said.

Read on to know what these lesser-known signs of inflammation are in the body and fix them now for a heathier life:

2/11

"Constant fatigue even after enough sleep"

Persistent fatigue, even after sufficient rest, is a classic sign of chronic inflammation. Studies indicate that inflammation can disrupt energy metabolism and interfere with one's sleep quality, leading to feeling tired even after resting well. This condition is notably present in disorders like chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).

3/11

"Unexplained weight gain or difficulty losing weight"

Chronic inflammation can deeply affect one's metabolism, leading to weight gain or difficulty in losing weight. Inflammatory markers like IL-6 and TNF-α are linked with increased fat storage and reduced fat breakdown. This inflammatory state can create a cycle that hinders weight management efforts. In the long run, "sustained inflammation is considered a strong risk factor for developing many diseases including CVDs, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and cancer," reads a study titled 'Obesity and inflammation: the linking mechanism and the complications'.

4/11

"Frequent bloating, gas, or digestive discomfort"

Inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract can cause symptoms like bloating, gas, and discomfort. Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are linked to chronic gut inflammation, leading to these digestive issues.

5/11

"Brain fog or poor concentration"

Apart from affecting metabolism, chronic inflammation can also affect brain function, leading to cognitive issues like brain fog and poor concentration. A 2022 study showed how common inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6) are related to cognitive impairment, anxiety, and depression in acute ischemic stroke patients. This indicated how inflammation can affect brain function.

6/11

"Joint stiffness or muscle aches without clear injury"

Some inflammatory health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and gout can cause joint stiffness and muscle aches without any particular injury. These symptoms result from systemic inflammation affecting joints and muscles, leading to pain and discomfort. "Chronic inflammation in the joints can damage cartilage, bones, tendons (which attach muscle to bones), or ligaments (which hold joints together); irritate nerves; and produce a long list of symptoms, including pain, swelling, and stiffness. The joint damage may be progressive and irreversible," reads an article on Harvard Health Publishing.

7/11

"Persistent skin issues like acne, eczema, or rashes"

Another common yet hidden sign of chronic inflammation is skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Inflammatory processes can affect the skin's barrier function and immune response, thus causing skin issues that are persistent for long.

8/11

"Low mood, anxiety or irritability"

Just like chronic inflammation can cause brain fog, it can also be a hidden reason for one's persistent low mood, anxiety or irritability. Studies suggest that inflammatory cytokines can influence brain regions involved in mood regulation, contributing to symptoms like low mood and irritability.

9/11

"Sugar craving and frequent energy crashes"

Sugar cravings and frequent energy crashes can signal chronic inflammation because inflamed tissues affect how your body processes sugar. Inflammation disrupts insulin sensitivity, making blood sugar spike quickly after eating and then drop sharply, causing energy crashes. This unstable blood sugar triggers intense cravings for quick energy sources, usually sugary foods, creating a vicious cycle. Also, chronic inflammation affects hormones like cortisol and leptin, which regulate hunger and energy. This further leads to cravings and fatigue. Over time, these patterns can silently strain metabolism, increase oxidative stress, and worsen inflammatory responses, revealing that your body’s persistent sugar cravings and energy dips may reflect hidden inflammation.

10/11

"Slow recovery from workouts or minor illnesses"

A 2022 study titled 'The Impact of Prolonged Inflammation on Wound Healing' highlights that persistent inflammation significantly delays wound healing by prolonging the inflammatory phase and blocking transition to the proliferation phase, which is important for recovery thus delaying it.

11/11

"Puffy face or water retention"

A puffy face or water retention can be a subtle sign of chronic inflammation. When the body experiences ongoing inflammation, it releases chemicals like cytokines that cause blood vessels to leak fluid into surrounding tissues, leading to swelling or puffiness—especially around the face, eyes, and ankles. This fluid buildup is the body’s way of trying to protect and heal tissues, but when inflammation is persistent and long-term, it disrupts normal fluid balance and lymphatic drainage in the body. Hormonal imbalances triggered by inflammation, such as high cortisol levels, can also worsen water retention in the body.
