Digital detox is necessary

Enveloped in the era of the digital age, our gaze is inevitably drawn to screens, as they encapsulate our entire world—be it for entertainment, information, news, real-time updates, or, significantly, work that demands our incessant 24/7 attention and diligence. In this era of perpetual connectivity and our unwavering reliance on screens, we often deal with a spectrum of issues ranging from dry eyes, blurred vision, to neck and shoulder pain, accompanied by persistent headaches. It's crucial to be mindful of our screen time before it exacts a toll on our eyes and overall well-being.

While it's challenging to escape screens entirely, given their pervasive presence, there are effective strategies to manage and enhance eye care. Despite the constant pull toward screens, adopting certain tips and tricks can significantly contribute to maintaining optimal vision and overall eye health in the long run.

2/7

Limit the screen time

Use the screens when needed and urgent only. Implement the screen time limit for yourself and kids too. It will greatly impact the quality of your life and give a little break to your eyes. Your body will thank you!

3/7

Don’t forget to blink

Dr. Prasad Walimbe, Pediatric Ophthalmologist and HOD Ophthalmology Deptt, at Jehangir Hospital, Pune says, "Blinking frequency tends to decrease while gazing at screens, plummeting from approximately 15 blinks per minute to 5 or 7 blinks. This diminished rate can result in dry and irritated eyes. After every 20 mins, close your eyes for a few seconds to refresh the vision and moisturise them."
4/7

Block the blue light

You can use blue light-blocking screen filters, especially during prolonged screen use. Explore your device settings to activate the blue light filter feature for added protection.

5/7

Proactive measures

The 20-20-20 Rule: Incorporate the 20-20-20 rule consistently into your screen time routine. After every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at objects beyond 20 feet. During these breaks, engage in eye exercises to promote eye flexibility and reduce strain. This practice is essential for working professionals and individuals experiencing eye strain.

6/7

Optimising workspaces, lighting matters

Ensure your workspace is well-lit but without glare. Use adjustable lighting to reduce strain, and position your screen to avoid reflections and unnecessary glare.

7/7

Prioritising regular eye check-ups

Schedule comprehensive eye exams at least once a year, even if you don't experience noticeable issues. Discuss your digital device usage with your eye care professional to tailor recommendations to your needs.
