Fight against coronavirus: From the right way to remove it, store it and wash it, here is your detailed facemask guide

With the number of coronavirus cases increasing every day, face masks have become an important part of our daily lives. Talking about facemasks, we all have to agree they make us feel a little uncomfortable. But with no option of not wearing them, the best way is to find a mask that makes us feel comfortable.

Fabric masks are more breathable and comfortable. Not just this, they are also reusable, making them budget friendly.

According to the new guidelines from the World Health Organisation (WHO), one needs to make sure that their mask fits properly and that they do not touch the outer side of the mask to prevent infection spread.

Here are some other things that WHO urges people to keep in mind while wearing a fabric mask:

2/5

The three layers of mask

Outer layer: The outer layer of the mask should be made of water-resistant fabric.

Middle layer: The middle layer should act as a filter.

Inner layer: The inner layer should be water-absorbent.

3/5

Here are some key points to be kept in mind if you are wearing a fabric mask:

1. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based sanitizer before wearing a mask.

2. Check your mask properly and make sure it is not damaged from anywhere.

3. Wear your mask properly such that it covers your face and nose. There should be no gap between your face and the mask.

4. To avoid contamination of your hands, do not touch the outer layer of the mask while you are wearing it. If you by mistake touch your mask, make sure to wash/sanitize your hands.

Here is a video by the Ministry of Family and Welfare about the right way to use a homemade mask

4/5

The right way to take off the fabric mask

1. Just like you clean your hands before wearing a mask, wash/sanitize your hands even before removing the mask.

2. When you remove the mask, make sure not to touch the front of the mask. Just remove the loop from behind your ears.

3. Wash your hands thoroughly after removing the mask.

4. If your mask is made of cloth, wash it when you wash your hands. Leave the mask in the sun to dry.

5/5

Other tips to keep in mind

- Do not share your mask with anyone. If you are making a mask at home, make two. This is because if you wash one, you have another spare one to use.

- Store your fabric mask in a reusable pouch, which can also be made at home.

- Use warm water and soap to wash your fabric mask when you come back home.

- If you are wearing a mask, that doesn't mean you are completely safe. To stay safe, make sure to follow other precautions like social distancing, not touching any unnecessary objects when you go out.

I first apply a little bit of handwash on surfaces and keep the mask in the afternoon Sun for atleast 30 minutes. after three uses I wash it in the washing machine with other clothes.
