Brazilian fitness influencer Larissa Borges, 33, passed away on Monday after suffering a double cardiac arrest due to unknown causes.

“The pain of losing someone so young, just 33 years old, and so kind, is overwhelming,” the bereaved relatives wrote on Instagram. “Our hearts are broken, and the longing we will feel is indescribable.” They added that Borges had “fought courageously” for her life.

What exactly happened?

According to local media, the popular influencer had been hospitalized on August 20th after suffering from cardiac arrest while traveling in Gramado, Brazil, reported New York Post.

She subsequently went into a coma, where she remained for a week. Borges later suffered a second cardiac episode and passed away shortly thereafter.

Cause of death unknown

The influencer’s cause of death is still not clear. A preliminary investigation revealed that she may have been intoxicated at the time of her heart troubles. Authorities have scheduled Borges’ body for a post-mortem examination to determine the root cause.

“There is a report of a possible ingestion of narcotic substances, accumulated with alcoholic beverages,” reported Deputy Gustavo Barcellos of the ongoing investigation. “The body was sent for necropsy. We will try to search through laboratory tests for substances that she possibly consumed.”

What is a cardiac arrest?

According to the US National Institute of Health (NIH), cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops pumping. When this happens, blood stops flowing to the brain and other vital organs. Cardiac arrests are caused by certain types of arrhythmias (a problem with the rate or rhythm of your heartbeat) that prevent the heart from pumping blood.

According to the Mayo Clinic, sudden cardiac arrest isn't the same as a heart attack. “A heart attack happens when blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked. Sudden cardiac arrest is not due to a blockage. However, a heart attack can cause a change in the heart's electrical activity that leads to sudden cardiac arrest.”

What happens in a double cardiac arrest?

In case of a double cardiac arrest, a person experiences one episode of cardiac arrest, followed by another. This comes under the bracket of experiencing multiple episodes of cardiac arrest or recurrent cardiac arrests. The number of cardiac arrests you can survive depends on person to person and how quickly you receive medical help.
