Forget Ozempic! Study reveals common kitchen spice that can fight obesity naturally
Novo Nordisk dropped the price of its injectable weight-loss drugs Wegovy and Ozempic recently. But guess what? A humble kitchen spice might offer similar slimming benefits, sans the needles.
A clinical trial led by Osaka Metropolitan University researchers found that black cumin seeds, a common kitchen spice, may offer anti-obesity benefits. The findings of the trial are published in the journal Food Science & Nutrition.
To understand the anti-obesity effects of black cumin seeds, the researchers conducted cellular experiments and human clinical trials. The team was led by Associate Professor Akiko Kojima-Yuasa of the Graduate School of Human Life and Ecology.
The participants were given 5 g of black cumin seed powder daily, roughly a tablespoon, for 8 weeks during the human clinical trial. The researchers found that cumin seeds led to a significant reduction in blood triglycerides, LDL (‘bad’) cholesterol, and total cholesterol levels. They also noticed HDL (‘good’) cholesterol levels increasing. Improvements in these blood lipid profiles are linked to a lower risk of heart problems and premature death.
“This study strongly suggests that black cumin seeds are useful as a functional food for preventing obesity and lifestyle-related diseases. It was so gratifying to see black cumin comprehensively demonstrate actual, demonstrable blood lipid-lowering effects in a human trial,” Professor Kojima-Yuasa said.
“We hope to perform longer-term and larger-scale clinical trials to investigate the effects of black cumin on metabolism. We are particularly interested in investigating its effects on insulin resistance in diabetes and inflammatory markers,” she added.
These promising results could pave the way for new, science-backed approaches to managing weight using everyday dietary ingredients. In the near future, your doctor might recommend keeping a jar of black cumin seeds alongside your vitamins. You might have to go on a grocery run instead of waiting in line at the pharmacy! Who knows?

Ancient wisdom proven true
Black cumin (Nigella sativa) has been used for centuries across the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia, both as a spice and as part of traditional medicine for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Now, a clinical study by Osaka Metropolitan University suggests that it also has anti-obesity benefits. To understand the anti-obesity effects of black cumin seeds, the researchers conducted cellular experiments and human clinical trials. How black cumin works against fat
The research did not stop there. They conducted cellular experiments to understand the mechanism behind the spice’s anti-obesity effects. They found that black cumin seed extract inhibited adipogenesis, the formation and maturation of fat cells, by blocking both fat droplet accumulation and the differentiation process.“This study strongly suggests that black cumin seeds are useful as a functional food for preventing obesity and lifestyle-related diseases.
