Are you experiencing sudden weight gain?

Our weight often fluctuates due to various lifestyle factors such as age, illness, diet, hormones and level of physical activity. Usually, the weight can rise or fall by a few grams or kilos over a span of days. This weight fluctuation can be big over a span of months or years. However, if you notice a sudden or unexpected weight gain in a short period of time, it could be due to an underlying health condition.

Now what time period and amount of weight qualifies as 'sudden weight gain' depends on various factors such as a person's baseline weight, body composition and underlying health conditions. Here are some possible health conditions that can lead to unexpected weight gain.

Hypothyroidism

An underactive thyroid gland, also known as hypothyroidism, can slow down your metabolism, leading to fluid retention. A reduced metabolic rate also means fewer calories are burned at rest, which can contribute to weight gain.

Hypothyroidism can also cause water retention due to the decreased efficiency of the thyroid hormones in regulating fluid balance in the body. This can lead to temporary weight gain.

The accumulation of fats in the body due to hypothyroidism can also lead to weight gain. Further, people with an underactive thyroid may experience changes in their appetite, which can also lead to an increase in eating and subsequent weight gain.

Heart failure, kidney or liver disease

According to health experts, heart failure, kidney or liver disease can also cause fluid retention in the body. This can lead to sudden rise in body weight.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can also cause weight gain in people with ovaries. This occurs due to insulin resistance and hormonal imbalances.

What to do in case of sudden weight gain?

Unexplained weight gain can have various medical causes. So it is advisable to have your symptoms checked by your doctor. Do not jump to conclusions before your doctor’s diagnosis.

If an underlying medical condition is identified as the cause of the weight gain, it is recommended to follow an appropriate treatment plan for the same for your timely treatment as well as restore your normal body weight.
