Heart attack: 'Silent' signs you are likely to experience at night

Telltale symptoms of heart damage

Each year, an alarming 17 million lives are claimed by cardiovascular diseases (CVD) worldwide, encompassing heart attacks and strokes according to WHO. These conditions affect men and women almost equally, with 80% of premature deaths attributed to CVD preventable through the management of key risk factors such as tobacco use, an unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity. Here are some heart damage signs that you should not ignore even at night.

2/8

Causes of a heart attack

A heart attack, or myocardial infarction, occurs when sections of the heart muscle are deprived of oxygen due to a blockage in blood flow. The primary culprit behind a heart attack is the accumulation of plaque in the arteries, a condition known as atherosclerosis. Plaque, composed of deposits, cholesterol, and other substances, can rupture, leading to the formation of blood clots— the actual trigger for a heart attack, as per John Hopkins Medicine. In the absence of sufficient blood and oxygen supply, heart muscle cells begin to undergo irreversible damage within 30 minutes of blockage, resulting in impaired heart function.

Shortness of breath

The initial murmur of impending cardiac distress often whispers through the night, manifesting as nocturnal difficulty in breathing. The act of lying down prompts the body to redistribute fluids, which, in the presence of existing heart damage, can precipitate fluid buildup in the lungs, intensifying respiratory challenges.

4/8

Night sweats

As the night unfolds, unjustifiable sweating may serve as a prompt to a heart that may be damaged. Often dismissed, night sweats stand as an overlooked harbinger of impending heart attacks, subtly signaling the gradual deterioration of cardiac health.

5/8

Unusual nighttime coughing

A persistent cough echoing through the depths of night can be more than a mere annoyance; it can serve as an urgent signal of potential heart damage. Heart damage may give rise to fluid accumulation in the lungs, thereby irritating airways and instigating a persistent and disruptive cough.

6/8

Swollen legs, ankles, and feet

In the quiet hours of the night, an unusual swelling may betray an ailing heart's struggle. Damaged hearts may hesitate in efficiently pumping fluids upward, resulting in the accumulation of fluid in the lower extremities when the body is at rest.

7/8

Excessive snoring

The nocturnal symphony of snoring, while commonplace, may crescendo into a concerning melody when excessive. This may be attributed to sleep apnea, a condition contributing to heart damage. Sleep apnea, with its intermittent stopping of breathing during deep sleep, places the heart up for an internal injury.

Prevention strategies

Understanding the risk factors for the disease and heart attacks is crucial in preventing heart attacks. By adopting a few lifestyle changes, you can significantly reduce your risk:

- Quit smoking, with your doctor's guidance if needed.

- Maintain a diet low in fat, cholesterol, and salt.

- Regularly monitor blood pressure and cholesterol levels with your doctor.

- Engage in moderate, regular aerobic exercise after consulting with your doctor.

- Lose weight if overweight.

- Consider low-dose aspirin under your doctor's recommendation to reduce clotting risk.

- Women approaching menopause should discuss the potential cardio-protective benefits of estrogen replacement therapy with their doctor
