We often ignore subtle changes in our body considering them harmless

However, sometimes these changes are an indication of some serious diseases and neglecting them can lead to life threatening consequences. Heart diseases kill close to 19 million people every year, says the World Health Organisation (WHO) which makes it important to know and understand even the remotest and most subtle symptoms associated with the disease. Here are a few signs of heart diseases seen in the feet:

Swelling or edema

Persistent swelling in the feet and ankles can be an early sign of heart disease. When the heart fails to pump blood efficiently, fluid can build up in the lower extremities due to poor circulation. This condition, known as edema, is common in people with heart failure. If swelling occurs frequently, especially without an apparent reason like injury, it is essential to seek medical evaluation.

Cold and discolored feet

A bluish or purplish discoloration in the legs, known as cyanosis, may appear due to insufficient oxygen supply. This symptom suggests a blockage in the arteries, which can increase the risk of heart disease. Poor blood circulation due to heart disease can cause the feet to feel unusually cold.

4/8

Ulcers and wounds

Poor circulation slows the body’s ability to heal wounds, particularly on the feet and toes. If you notice sores that take longer than usual to heal or appear without any clear injury, it could indicate peripheral artery disease (PAD), a condition closely linked to heart disease. Left untreated, PAD can lead to severe infections and even gangrene.

5/8

Pain while walking

Some people experience pain while walking. This is medically known as intermittent claudication and refers to pain, cramping, or discomfort in the feet and legs while walking, which subsides with rest. This occurs due to narrowed or blocked arteries restricting blood flow to the muscles. It is a hallmark symptom of PAD and a significant warning sign of underlying heart disease.

6/8

Discolored toenails

Small red or purple streaks under the toenails, known as splinter hemorrhages, can sometimes be linked to bacterial endocarditis—a serious infection of the heart's inner lining. While minor trauma to the toes can also cause this symptom, its persistent occurrence should not be ignored.

7/8

Numbness in the feet

Frequent numbness or tingling in the feet could indicate poor circulation due to cardiovascular issues. While conditions like diabetes also cause neuropathy, heart disease-related circulation problems can similarly result in nerve damage and loss of sensation.

8/8

Preventive measures to keep the heart healthy

While keeping an eye on the symptoms is definitely a crucial preventive measure to keep the heart healthy, adopting a healthy lifestyle plays a big role too.
Physical activity helps improve circulation and strengthens the heart. Walking, cycling, swimming, and yoga are excellent choices for maintaining good cardiovascular health and preventing PAD-related foot problems. Conditions like diabetes, obesity, and kidney disease can increase the risk of both heart disease and foot-related complications. Proper management through medication, lifestyle changes, and routine medical care is essential. Prioritizing heart health through a balanced diet, regular exercise, and proper medical care can help maintain both cardiovascular and foot health.
