What is apple cider vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar is obtained from the apples which are crushed, distilled and fermented. It is usually consumed in small quantities for several health benefits it offers due to the high levels of acetic acid and other compounds.

It is recommended that diluted vinegar should be consumed.

Just like every other popular food, apple cider vinegar has several myths associated with it. In this article we will discuss all those myths and the facts that people should know about this.

2/6

Apple cider vinegar is mostly used for weight loss

As per a 2018 report published in the Harvard Health Blog, "in all, the scientific evidence that vinegar consumption (whether of the apple cider variety or not) is a reliable, long-term means of losing excess weight is not compelling."

There have been several studies, including those on animals, showing the effects of apple cider vinegar on weight. One of the most cited and reported studies is that of 175 people who lost weight by consuming the vinegar.

3/6

Is apple cider vinegar a cure for diabetes?

Few studies have found that there is an effect of consuming apple cider vinegar on insulin spikes.

A 2015 research study published in the Journal of Diabetes Research found that people with diabetes who drank apple cider vinegar saw a decline in blood glucose, insulin, and triglyceride levels soon after they consumed it.

However, the study had limitations and could not establish the long term effects of the vinegar on diabetes.

Myths: Apple cider vinegar has no side effects

Anything when consumed in excess will definitely have a negative effect on the body, irrespective of what health benefits they offer.

Firstly, one should never consume apple cider vinegar without diluting it.

Secondly, consuming lots of apple cider vinegar can lower your potassium levels.

5/6

Myth: Apple cider vinegar can prevent cancer

Do not believe in such myths especially when you have to deal with life threatening diseases like cancer.

Though you will come across research works saying apple cider vinegar inhibits the growth of cancer cells, there are several other factors associated with it.

The best practice will be to contact your doctor and get treatment for cancer.

6/6

Myth: Apple cider vinegar can lower cholesterol

Again this myth stems from a few studies who found that consumption of apple cider vinegar lowered cholesterol level. However, most of the studies were done on animals.

Do not rely on vinegar if you have a cholesterol problem. Consult your doctor and get treated for the same. Take medication and change your lifestyle in order to bring cholesterol under control.
