Some lesser known symptoms of thyoid

Hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid is generally associated with weight gain, fatigue and constipation. But apart from these, there are several other symptoms of this hormonal condition that many may not know about. When it comes to an underactive thyroid, the symptoms actually vary from one individual to another. Apart from the hallmark sign of hypothyroidism, there are several lesser-known signs of the condition that you must know how to identify early to get appropriate treatment.

2/8

What is an underactive thyroid?

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland present at the base of the neck. Its job is to produce three different kinds of hormones that are required by the body to regulate the metabolism in the form of blood pressure, blood temperature, and heart rate. When the thyroid is not active enough, the gland fails to produce enough hormones. It affects the functioning of the entire body and puts the person at risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, infertility and other conditions. Here are some symptoms that might catch you off guard.

3/8

Headaches

Studies suggest that about 30 per cent of people suffering from hypothyroidism experience headaches. It hasn't been proven if hypothyroidism can lead to headaches, but there are reasons to believe so. An underactive thyroid may slow down blood circulation to the brain that may be the cause of headaches. Moreover, fatigue which is a common symptom of hypothyroidism is believed to trigger migraine headaches.

4/8

Memory changes

Unidentified and unmanaged thyroid disease can also affect the cognitive functions of an individual. The person suffering from this condition may not be able to concentrate or remember things clearly. This sign is more common in those suffering from severe hypothyroidism. In mild cases, brain fog is more common. These people do not undergo cognitive decline.

5/8

Mood swings

A low level of thyroid hormone also affects the mood of an individual. Depression, sadness or anxiety are commonly linked with this condition that often goes unnoticed. That happens due to fatigue associated with hypothyroidism. Low energy can lead to health symptoms such as depression, anxiety and mood swings. These symptoms are often misdiagnosed as clinical depression.

6/8

Dry skin

Healthy and nourished skin is a sign of an efficient thyroid gland. So, when the functioning of this gland decreases, the skin starts to appear dry and dull. Besides, a low level of thyroid hormones can also lead to skin thickening, scaling and itching. In some cases, the condition is severe and may lead to dry scalp, feet and toes.

7/8

Hair thinning

Hair loss or thinning can happen due to several reasons like stress, pollutions. Another common cause of hair loss is hypothyroidism. The person suffering from this condition may lose hair from the scalp and even eyebrows. It happens because a low level of thyroid hormone can slow down follicle stimulation. The signs are not visible in all and may vary from person to person. Hair thinning generally starts 3-4 months after the onset of hypothyroidism.

8/8

Thyroid tightness

Inflammation or swelling of the thyroid gland can also cause tightness in the throat. The person may face difficulty in swallowing and discomfort. In some cases, people can feel inflammation or lump near the throat on self-examination.
