Liver Cancer: Not lack of appetite, but these are the early symptoms of this disease

Liver cancer is often called a ‘silent killer’ because it often develops quietly, showing little to no obvious symptoms in early stages. It is assumed that loss of appetite is an early warning sign of liver cancer, however, research shows that this disease often begins with subtle, easily overlooked changes in the body.
The most common type of liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma, which has a reputation of inhibiting silent symptoms. Risk factors of liver cancer include chronic hepatitis B or C infection, cirrhosis from alcohol or fatty liver disease, obesity, and exposure to certain toxins.
Early detection of liver cancer symptoms can significantly improve treatment outcomes. Studies have shown that timely diagnosis, followed by interventions such as surgery, liver transplant, or targeted therapies, can significantly increase survival rates.

2/8

Abdominal discomfort

Abdominal discomfort can be one of the very earliest signs of liver cancer, often appearing before more obvious symptoms like jaundice or significant weight loss. Studies have noted that abdominal discomfort is often reported in patients with early hepatocellular carcinoma, even before other classical symptoms like jaundice appear.
Discomfort in such cases is usually felt in the upper right portion of the abdomen, that is, just beneath where the liver sits. These symptoms are often overlooked as a cause of some other issue.

3/8

Occasional low-grade fever

Cancer Research UK notes that systemic symptoms, such as fever, can sometimes accompany early liver malignancy, especially in the absence of infection.
Mild, intermittent fevers should prompt evaluation, especially if they are persistent and unexplained. Early blood tests, liver function assessments, and imaging studies can help identify liver abnormalities before severe symptoms develop.

4/8

Changes in urine or stool

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology highlighted that changes in stool color, along with dark urine, are among the initial symptoms of hepatocellular carcinoma. These symptoms often precede more obvious signs and can be indicative of early liver dysfunction. Furthermore, the Mayo Clinic notes that white or chalky stools can result from the liver's inability to secrete bile, a condition that may be associated with liver cancer.

5/8

Persistent tiredness

The liver is central to the body’s metabolism, detoxification, and energy regulation. When the liver is damaged or a tumor begins to develop, several processes that sustain energy can be disrupted. A study reported that fatigue was one of the most frequently reported early symptoms among patients diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma. Persistent fatigue should raise concern regarding liver cancer if the tiredness is unexplained and does not improve with rest.

6/8

Early detection of risk factors

Early signs of liver cancer are easily overlooked because they are often subtle, non-specific, and slow to develop. Identifying whether subtle symptoms like fatigue, mild abdominal discomfort, or changes in urine and stool are due to liver cancer requires medical evaluation, because these signs can overlap with many other conditions. Medical professionals may perform blood tests, imaging tests, or liver biopsy to determine if liver cancer or another condition is causing the symptoms.
Without medical testing, there isn’t a way to definitively know if these early symptoms are liver cancer. Awareness of subtle signs, especially in high-risk individuals, combined with timely medical evaluation, is the most effective strategy for early detection and improved outcomes.See More: Fatty liver causes symptoms complications and prevention

7/8

Other early signs of liver cancer

Early signs of liver cancer include unexplained weight loss, fatigue, abdominal pain, jaundice, and loss of appetite. Prompt evaluation is crucial.

8/8

How to cleanse the liver properly

To cleanse the liver, focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Reduce alcohol, processed foods, and added sugars. Stay hydrated, exercise regularly, and include liver-supporting foods like garlic, turmeric, and leafy greens. Avoid unnecessary medications and consider regular checkups to monitor liver health effectively.
