Mad cow disease: Can it be fatal for humans?

New case of mad cow disease raises alarm:

According to the news agency Reuters, a case of mad cow disease has been identified in Brazil's state of Para, which is located in the north. "The symptomatology implies that it is the atypical form of the disease, which develops spontaneously in nature and poses no risk of dissemination to the herd or to humans," said Para's agricultural defence agency.

To determine if it was the "classic" type of the disease or its "atypical" variation, samples were sent to the Alberta, Canada, laboratory of the International Organization for Animal Health.

How is mad cow disease defined?

Mad cow disease, also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), is a deadly infection that affects the central nervous system of adult cattle and is degenerative, contagious, slowly progressing, and degenerative.

According to studies, a prion is a type of aberrant protein that is typically present on cell surfaces. The brain and spinal cord's nervous system tissue is destroyed by these proteins after they are changed.

Symptom of mad cow disease:

Incoordination is a typical indication of BSE in cows, according to the US Food and Drug Administration. BSE is frequently referred to as "mad cow disease" because a diseased cow has problems walking and getting up, and they may also act agitated or violently.

4/6

How long does it take to show symptoms?

When a cow contracts the aberrant prion, it typically takes four to six years before it begins to exhibit BSE symptoms. The incubation period is what we refer to as. A cow's BSE cannot be detected by gazing at it during the incubation stage. A cow usually succumbs to the illness within two weeks to six months of first exhibiting signs. It stated that there is no known cure for BSE and no vaccine to protect against it.

5/6

Why does mad cow disease occur?

The majority of scientists believe that a prion protein is what causes BSE. The normal prion protein transforms into a dangerous, aberrant prion protein for reasons that are not fully understood.

A cow contracts BSE by consuming feed that has been tainted with BSE-infected animal byproducts. The aberrant prion is present in the contaminated feed, and when a cow consumes the feed, it contracts the abnormal prion.

6/6

Can this disease spread to humans?

BSE does not spread easily. This indicates that it is not comparable to being sick. It cannot be contracted through being close to an ill person or cattle. Moreover, studies have demonstrated that even if milk originated from a sick cow, people cannot contract BSE by consuming dairy products or drinking milk.
