Mimicking a viral infection, 5 early symptoms of Lymphoma that one must not ignore

Lymphoma is a serious cancer of the immune system's lymphatic system, which starts when abnormal lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) multiply and collect in lymph nodes, impairing the immune system. According to oncologists, the initial symptoms of lymphoma resemble typical viral infection symptoms, which makes early detection challenging. People frequently identify these symptoms as typical flu, cold, or other minor illnesses which causes them to delay medical evaluation. The knowledge of initial symptoms enables patients to get medical help earlier. Here are 5 early symptoms of Lymphoma that are easy to miss, but demand attention....

2/6

Swollen lymph nodes

The first and most frequent indicator of lymphoma, appears as painless swollen lymph nodes which develop in the neck, armpits or groin region. The lymphoma nodes present as firm, painless growths that differ from infected nodes, which usually cause discomfort. The growth of these nodes happens gradually, while they remain firm to the touch. People tend to disregard these swollen nodes because they do not produce any pain. Medical evaluation becomes necessary when swollen nodes persist for extended periods, without signs of infection. The symptom presents difficulties because swollen nodes from viral infections also occur, but they remain painful, and heal within a short period of days or weeks.

3/6

Unexplained fever

Another sign of lymphoma, often presents as a recurring low-grade fever, which develops without any identifiable cause. The recurring fever pattern of lymphoma differs from standard infection-related fevers, because it does not respond to medical treatment. The fever remains at a low level but continues to persist. The medical term for this symptom in lymphoma patients is "B symptom", which commonly appears together with weight loss and night sweats. A single fever episode does not indicate a problem, but when it occurs with swollen lymph nodes and other symptoms, doctors should perform additional medical tests.

4/6

Heavy night sweats

Night sweats are a frequent initial sign of lymphoma, which doctors need to distinguish from other possible medical conditions. People with this condition experience severe nighttime sweating that makes their clothes and bed linens completely wet, even when the room temperature remains cool. The night sweats experienced by lymphoma patients produce excessive amounts of sweat, which disrupts their ability to sleep. The symptom frequently occurs together with fever and fatigue. People tend to dismiss night sweats, because they occasionally occur to many individuals. However, people who experience intense and recurring night sweats without apparent reasons, should consult their doctor, because these symptoms might point to lymphoma or other critical medical problems.

5/6

Unexplained weight loss

Unexplained weight loss exceeding 10% of body weight during a six-month period without dieting or exercise changes, can indicate lymphoma. The body loses weight unintentionally, while maintaining its regular eating habits and lifestyle patterns. This occurs because the body's metabolic rate increases because of cancer cell presence. The symptom usually appears together with other B symptoms which include fever and night sweats. Medical consultation becomes necessary when someone experiences weight loss together with swollen lymph nodes, or additional symptoms.

6/6

Persistent exhaustion

Lymphoma patients commonly experience unexplained persistent fatigue, which persists even after adequate rest. The fatigue experienced by patients differs from typical tiredness, because it fails to improve with adequate rest or sleep. The condition creates such severe tiredness, that it interferes with regular activities and diminishes life quality. The immune system response and red blood cell reduction from cancer cells, lead to fatigue in lymphoma patients. Medical evaluation becomes necessary when fatigue appears with swollen lymph nodes or night sweats, because these symptoms together indicate potential health issues.
