Neither banana nor apple; Scientists reveal the healthiest fruit of all (and why you should eat it every day)
We’re also aware of the nutrition-packed versatility bananas bring – it blends with almost any other food item, while delivering the much-needed dose of potassium, fiber, vitamin C, and even vitamin B6.
Which fruit is it?
It’s lemon!
A recent nutritional ranking by William Paterson University evaluated 41 fruits and declared lemons top of the chart, thanks to their unbeatable combo of vitamin C, fiber, antioxidants, flavonoids, and alkalizing effects. This ‘pocket-sized powerhouse’ not only supports immunity, digestion but also aids in heart health and more.
Lemon: The citrus superstar
When researchers analyzed a variety of fruits, they weren’t just looking for the tastiest one; they wanted to know which ones topped the chart when it came to the best nutritional bet.
A team at William Paterson University examined 41 different fruits, measuring nutritional density, antioxidant levels, and health benefits.
What did they find?
Lemons came out on top. They are low in calories but packed with vitamin C, powerful plant compounds called flavonoids, soluble fiber, and phytochemicals that promote overall well-being. Even just a little lemon is loaded with a good dose of health benefits. From boosting your immune system to improving digestion and even lowering your risk of heart disease, lemons are far more than just the tangy, zesty garnish.
The bonus point?
Well, that comes with a fun twist.
It’s common knowledge that lemons are acidic (re: citrus fruit, citric acid) and hence sour in taste; but once your body processes them, they actually have an alkalizing effect. What does that imply? This means they help balance your body’s pH levels and support a healthy gut. Researchers also noted that lemon’s acidity isn’t a bad thing; in fact, the sour punch packed with vitamin C is what gives your immune system a boost.
What’s more? Lemon’s soluble fiber helps regulate digestion, stabilize blood sugar, and feed good gut bacteria. And the flavonoids may help lower blood pressure and cholesterol, providing cardiovascular protection.
What about limes.. The younger cousin?
Turns out, the goodness runs in the whole family. As per research, limes are also pretty great, being rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. However, according to the researchers, lemons have the edge because they contain more flavonoids, they key compound in fighting inflammation and boosting health.
Another brownie point? Lemon peels are thicker and packed with essential oils like limonene, which have anti-microbial and possibly even anti-cancer properties. So, in case you thought all that you could do was juice the pulp, hold on and don’t toss that peel. Rather, grate it into your dishes for some extra zest and health magic!
Tips to add lemon to your life
It’s okay if you don’t like biting into a lemon edge like it’s an orange or grapefruit. There are several other ways to make lemons part of your daily diet. Here are some convenient ones –
Squeeze some juice into your warm water for a refreshing boost. You might add a dash of honey for a touch of sweetness.
Add a splash to soups or salads for extra flavor and nutrients; if you’re more versed with rice bowls, add a couple of lemon wedges by the side. The slight tanginess will only elevate the dish.
Grate a little zest over your favorite dishes for a pop of flavor and a dash of antioxidants. You might try the same with certain desserts as well.
However, refrain from drinking lemon juice straight up on an empty stomach. The acidic factor of lemon might mess with your tooth enamel or irritate your tummy. Always dilute it in water, and if you have digestive issues, check with a healthcare provider before incorporating lemons into your regular diet.
