NOT just rashes: Common signs of skin cancer you might overlook

Skin cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer globally, yet many individuals remain unaware of its subtle and often overlooked early signs. In fact, in the United States alone, an estimated 5.4 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed annually. While moles and rashes are commonly associated with skin cancer, several other indicators may signal the presence of this disease. Recognizing these signs early can be crucial for effective treatment and better outcomes.

2/9

Persistent itchy or painful skin

Itching or tenderness on the skin, especially in areas not typically prone to irritation, can be a warning sign of skin cancer. Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer and often presents as a shiny, pearly bump or a scar-like area that doesn't heal.

3/9

Changes in nail appearance

Dark streaks or bands under the nails, known as subungual melanoma, can be a rare but serious form of skin cancer. This type of melanoma often appears as a brown or black streak under a fingernail or toenail and can cause the nail to separate from the nail bed.

4/9

Unexplained skin discoloration

Sudden changes in skin color, such as the appearance of red, purple, or brown patches, can be indicative of skin cancer. These changes may resemble bruises or rashes but persist longer than typical skin irritations. For example, Kaposi's sarcoma, a rare form of skin cancer, presents as red or purple patches that grow in the skin and are often associated with weakened immune systems.

5/9

Persistent dry or crusty patches

Dry, scaly patches that don't respond to typical treatments may be a sign of actinic keratosis, a precancerous condition that can develop into squamous cell carcinoma if left untreated. These patches often appear on sun-exposed areas and may feel rough or crusty. Having a patch of skin that remains dry or crusty despite moisturizing or other treatments might indicate the development of skin cancer.

6/9

Changes in existing moles

While new moles can be a sign of skin cancer, changes in existing moles are also significant. If a mole becomes asymmetrical, has irregular borders, changes color, becomes larger than 6mm, or starts to itch, bleed, or crust, it could be a sign of melanoma. Regularly monitoring your moles and seeking medical attention for any changes is crucial for early detection.

7/9

Non-healing sores or ulcers

A sore or ulcer that doesn't heal within a few weeks may indicate skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma, for example, can appear as an open sore that oozes or crusts over but doesn't heal. Similarly, squamous cell carcinoma can present as a scaly, raised patch that may bleed or crust. These lesions often develop on sun-exposed areas such as the face, ears, neck, scalp, chest, backs of hands, arms, or legs.

8/9

New growths or lumps

The development of new growths or lumps on the skin, especially after the age of 30, can be a sign of skin cancer. These growths may appear as raised, firm pink, red, or brown lumps. Squamous cell carcinoma often presents as red, scaly lumps that resemble old warts or scabs.

9/9

Skin that doesn't heal properly

Skin that doesn't heal properly, such as cuts or abrasions that remain open or continue to bleed, can be a sign of skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma, for instance, may cause a sore that doesn't heal or heals and then reopens. If you have a skin injury that isn't healing as expected, it's important to seek medical advice.
