Not just sugar, THESE are the archnemeses of a diabetes patient

Sugar is held accountable for diabetes mostly

Whenever the discussion is about diabetes, we check our sugar intake. Many people hold the sugar accountable for diabetes and ignore the other diabetes-favoring foods that they consume on a regular basis.

It's not just the sugar there are several food items that disturb the blood sugar level in the body. If you are diabetic you need to know your archnemeses:

2/7

Packaged snacks

Packaged snacks which do not have a salt taste are in fact the major contributors of diabetes. They are made of refined flour and rapidly elevate the blood sugar levels in the body.

Always read the carbohydrate content in those packets but beware that some of the snacks may contain more carbs than what is mentioned on the packet.

If you have an urge for snacking in between meals, munch on a handful of nuts instead.

3/7

Dried fruits

Fruits already have a huge sugar content. The dried ones have a more concentrated form of sugar.

A simple example can show you how dried forms of fruits have more carbs in them. Dried raisins contain 115 grams of carbs which is much higher than the same amount of grapes.

If you like having dried fruits or if dried fruits are your only source of fruit consumption then opt for low sugar fruits.

4/7

Alcoholic drinks

Alcoholic drinks are rich in sugar and carbs. This is the reason why people with diabetes are advised to reduce the consumption of beer and wine.

There is another disadvantage to consumption of alcohol. Heavy drinking often combines with diabetes medication.

5/7

Fruit juice

While fruits in moderate quantities are good for diabetes, fruit juices should not be consumed carefully.

Just like dried fruits, fruit juices also have a concentrated amount of fruit sugar which drives the blood sugar upwards quickly.

Though fruit juices are loaded with vitamins and minerals, the high amount of sugar renders it unsuitable for diabetics.

6/7

Fried foods

Fried foods are overloaded with calories which can make the blood sugar level chaotic.

These foods initially spike blood sugar level and since fats take longer to digest it keeps the blood sugar level elevated.

Not just fat, they are also laden with trans fats which are the triggers for other diseases as well.

7/7

Processed carbs

Refined carbs like maida, white bread, and food items prepared from these should be avoided at all cost. These foods are low in fiber content and spike the blood sugar level in diabetics.

Opt for healthier and natural alternatives of these. Go for whole grain foods and seasonal fruits and vegetables.
