Pancreatic Cancer: Early symptoms and 5 common habits that can trigger it

Pancreatic cancer forms in the tissues of the pancreas, often in the cells lining the ducts (pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma). The condition typically evades detection, until it advances to an advanced stage. The pancreas functions as a small organ located behind the stomach, that performs essential tasks for digestion, and blood sugar management. The cancer develops hidden symptoms which resemble other diseases, so people typically receive their diagnosis when the cancer has spread throughout their body. People who recognise pancreatic cancer warning signs and stay away from risk factors, will increase their chances of detecting the disease at an earlier stage. Let's take a look..

2/7

Early warning signs

The first signs of pancreatic cancer emerge before the disease progresses to an advanced stage. The first sign of jaundice appears when bile duct blockage causes skin and eye discoloration to turn yellow. The blockage produces dark urine, together with light-colored stools and itchy skin as additional symptoms. The majority of patients experience abdominal or back pain, which manifests as a recurring dull ache. This occurs because the tumor disrupts digestion, which causes unexplained weight loss, poor appetite, nausea and vomiting in patients. The development of sudden diabetes or uncontrolled diabetes symptoms, indicates pancreatic cancer because the tumor disrupts insulin production in the pancreas. People need to monitor their health closely because pancreatic cancer symptoms resemble other medical issues, and tend to appear late in the disease process.

3/7

5 common habits that can trigger it - Smoking

The main risk factor that people can control to prevent pancreatic cancer is smoking. The DNA of pancreatic cells becomes damaged by tobacco smoke chemicals, which results in cancer-causing mutations. People who smoke face double to triple the risk of developing pancreatic cancer, when compared to non-smokers. The risk of pancreatic cancer decreases with time after someone stops smoking, regardless of their age. The use of any tobacco product including cigarettes, cigars and e cigarettes, leads to higher pancreatic cancer risk. People who want to decrease their chances of developing this cancer, should completely avoid all tobacco products.

4/7

Obesity and unhealthy diet

The risk of pancreatic cancer rises by 20% when people become obese, and their waist area accumulates fat. The consumption of red and processed meats, together with saturated fats and sugary drinks, leads to obesity, chronic inflammation, and insulin resistance which all contribute to cancer development. The absence of fruits, vegetables and whole grains in the diet, seems to raise the risk of developing cancer. A plant-based diet with minimal processed foods, helps people stay healthy, while potentially reducing their cancer risk. A person needs to control their weight through proper eating habits and physical activity, to prevent pancreatic cancer.

5/7

Alcohol consumption and chronic pancreatitis

The development of pancreatic cancer becomes more likely in people who drink heavily, because their pancreatitis condition leads to chronic inflammation of the organ. The inflammation of pancreatitis which lasts for an extended period, damages pancreatic tissue while creating conditions that promote cancer development. People who regularly drink large amounts of alcohol, face a higher risk of developing pancreatitis, which leads to pancreatic cancer development. The risk of pancreatic cancer decreases when people reduce their alcohol consumption to zero. People who want to protect their pancreas from cancer should exercise caution, because even moderate drinking may slightly raise their risk. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, staying hydrated, avoiding processed foods, and undergoing regular medical check-ups can further support long-term pancreatic health and prevention.

6/7

Physical inactivity and diabetes

The absence of physical activity results in weight gain and metabolic issues that result in type 2 diabetes. Pancreatic cancer develops more easily in people with obesity and diabetes, because these conditions affect insulin and growth factors that promote cancer cell multiplication. Exercise helps people keep their weight under control, and their blood sugar levels stable, which decreases their risk of developing pancreatic cancer. The onset of new diabetes or deteriorating diabetes management, might indicate pancreatic cancer development. Medical evaluation becomes necessary when diabetes appears unexpectedly, because it could indicate pancreatic cancer among other possible conditions.

7/7

Exposure to harmful chemicals

People who work in specific industries face a higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer. Workers in dry cleaning, metalworking and those handling heavy metals and carcinogenic substances, face elevated risks of developing pancreatic cancer. The pancreas experiences DNA damage from these chemicals, which leads to persistent inflammation that may result in cancer development. People should take steps to reduce their contact with dangerous substances, because it helps minimise their cancer risk. Workers who use protective equipment and follow workplace safety guidelines, can reduce their exposure to dangerous substances.
