Is it a panic attack or heart attack?

Both panic attacks and heart attacks come on suddenly and they even trigger similar symptoms. This can sometimes confuse the patient, making it difficult to identify what they are experiencing. While timely intervention is necessary in both the cases, having a sense of clarity on what you are feeling may help.

Further, heart attack describes a serious emergency that requires urgent medical help. This means that being able to identify the event promptly and getting help is of utmost importance. Here is how to differentiate between the two.

Common symptoms in both

Chest pain, shortness of breath, sweating and a feeling of dread can accompany both of these episodes.

Speaking on ITV’s show Lorraine, NHS UK Dr Amir Khan shared the “major difference” that could help tell the two apart.

Major differences between the two

“The major difference, really, is that a panic attack can come on at any time, even when you’re resting, or even sleeping, and it can wake you up," Express UK quoted Dr. Khan.

“Whereas, heart attack generally comes on when you exert yourself and the pain doesn’t just stay in your chest," he shared, adding, “For a lot of people, it can go down your arm, up into your jaw or neck area."

“With panic attacks, the pain eventually does subside, whereas, with heart attacks, it doesn’t tend to,” he added.

Seeking medical help

Dr Amir added that if you can’t determine whether you are having a heart attack or panic attack, it is best to seek medical help. In any case, consulting your doctor is important instead of dismissing your symptoms.

How to manage panic attacks

According to the doctor, in case of a panic attack, breathing exercises and trying to refocus your thoughts from what’s causing you to stress out can help.

Sharing a practice to help distract your mind, Dr Amir said, “Write down three things that you are positive or grateful for and focus on those three things. And take the spotlight of the thoughts that are negative on to more positive things.”

What to do if you get a heart attack?

In case of a heart attack, it is important to immediately call an ambulance. According to the Mayo Clinic, chew and swallow an aspirin while waiting for emergency help. "Aspirin helps keep your blood from clotting. When taken during a heart attack, it could reduce heart damage. Don't take aspirin if you are allergic to it or have been told by your healthcare provider never to take aspirin."
