Poor dental hygiene can lead to pneumonia; Here's how

Maintaining a good oral health is important

Maintaining dental health and oral hygiene doesn’t merely serve the purpose of having white teeth. Practicing oral health care allows the body’s natural defense to keep the bacteria under control. Hence, without proper dental hygiene, the bacteria lead to oral infections such as tooth decay and gum disease.
2/6

Here’s what the expert says

Dr. Deepa G Kamath, Professor, Department of Periodontology, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangalore , Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal says, “Lack of oral hygiene results in the infection and inflammation of the gums, ligaments, or bone around your teeth leading to gum disease or periodontitis which recedes the gums, deteriorates the bone around the teeth and loosens the teeth which fall out eventually.”

“What many fail to realise is how a lack of oral hygiene can influence the rest of your body. Studies indicate that among the common consequences of poor oral hygiene, the chances of developing pneumonia for those who didn’t undergo dental examinations are at a greater risk,” she adds.

How does poor dental hygiene lead to pneumonia?

Dr. Kamath says “When the mouth is packed with germs, an overgrowth of harmful bacteria causes dental problems and some of these bacteria enter the respiratory system. The oral bacteria then multiply and make their way into the lungs during sleep resulting in the formation of microbes that cause pneumonia.”

The bloodstream is another mechanism for germs to enter the body. Gum disease destroys the gum tissues which support the teeth leading to widespread inflammation throughout the body.

4/6

4 mechanisms of poor gum health that can worsen pneumonia:

The oral bacteria increases the sensors of the lung cells which would then allow the bacteria to bind to the receptors and cause damage.
The bacterial enzymes shatter the proteins that shield the cell. This in turn helps the bacteria to spread the disease.
The symptoms worsen due to the overproduction of mucus by the bacteria and its compounds.
When the body responds to pathogens with chemicals as a part of its defense system, it further wreaks havoc.

Measures to practise proper oral hygiene:

Brush your teeth twice every day with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush for two minutes
When the bristles are worn out, replace your toothbrush immediately.
Always floss to remove food particles that may remain between the teeth
Visit the dentist every six months for a check-up
Limit consumption of food and beverages rich in sugar.
Avoid smoking and consumption of tobacco.

The takeaway:

“This further signifies the importance of maintaining dental hygiene and removing bacteria regularly to prevent pneumonia. Besides the usual flossing and brushing, it is important to follow routine cleanings and dental check-ups to avoid the accumulation of harmful bacteria and plaque in the mouth,” advises Dr. Kamath.
In conclusion, dental specialists constantly stress the importance of maintaining the condition of one’s gums which helps in providing support to the teeth. The number of harmful bacteria and plaque can be significantly reduced by routine dental check-ups, keeping the mouth protected.
