Prostate Cancer: 5 early signs in men and why the PSA blood test is important

Prostate cancer is the malignant growth of cells in the prostate, a walnut-sized gland below the bladder, that is responsible for producing semen. The majority of prostate cancers develop at a slow pace, while early-stage conditions often produce no noticeable symptoms. Early detection of prostate cancer symptoms leads to better treatment opportunities, which enhance survival rates. The Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test functions to identify prostate issues before any symptoms emerge. Here are five prostate cancer warning signs that men should monitor, and why PSA testing is important.

2/12

Changes in urination habits

The first sign which indicates prostate cancer, often manifests through urinary system alterations. The prostate gland encircles the urethra which functions as the body's urine exit pathway. The expanding prostate gland creates pressure on the urethra, which results in urine flow problems. Men experience different urinary problems which include:

The process of starting and stopping urination becomes challenging.

The urine stream becomes weak and experiences interruptions during urination.

The last leg of urination produces a dribbling effect.

A person feels their bladder does not fully empty when they urinate.

Men experience increased urination during nighttime hours, which is known as nocturia.

Cancerous growth or prostate enlargement can produce these urinary system changes. Healthcare providers need to assess all new urinary symptoms because the condition Benign prostatic hyperplasia and cancer share similar symptoms.

3/12

Blood in urine or semen

Any amount of blood that appears in urine or semen, requires immediate medical evaluation, because it represents a critical warning sign. The medical terms hematuria (blood in urine) and hematospermia (blood in semen) suggest prostate cancer, or other prostate-related issues including infections and inflammation. Men who notice blood in their urine or semen need to get immediate medical evaluation, because these signs indicate abnormal conditions that require proper diagnosis and treatment.

4/12

Erectile dysfunction or painful ejaculation

The early stages of prostate cancer sometimes lead to sexual function problems in men. Prostate-related issues including cancer, can cause two main sexual problems: erectile dysfunction, and painful ejaculation. The prostate gland together with surrounding nerves, control sexual functions, and cancer development disrupts these essential processes. Men should discuss their erectile problems with their doctor, because these symptoms can stem from various factors including age and health conditions, although prostate issues need evaluation. Early detection and treatment not only improve survival rates but also help preserve sexual health, intimacy, and overall quality of life.

5/12

Discomfort or pain in the pelvic area or lower back

The first signs of prostate cancer sometimes manifest as pelvic area discomfort and lower back, hip and thigh pain in some patients. The pain from prostate cancer can persist continuously, or it may appear and disappear while affecting nerves and tissues surrounding the prostate. Medical evaluation becomes necessary for any prolonged pain in the pelvic region, lower back, hips or thighs, because it could indicate prostate cancer or another medical issue. Also See: New urine-based test to detect Prostate Cancer could replace painful biopsies

6/12

Frequent nighttime urination

Prostate cancer and other prostate diseases, often present with two early warning signs which include frequent nighttime urination and a strong immediate need to urinate. The symptoms develop because of prostate enlargement and bladder irritation from tumor growth. The condition requires prompt medical evaluation because nighttime urination disrupts sleep quality, and creates negative impacts on overall health and life satisfaction.

7/12

Why the PSA blood test is important

The Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test determines how much PSA protein from prostate cells exists in blood circulation. The PSA test detects prostate cancer through elevated protein levels, although elevated PSA readings can also result from non-cancerous prostate conditions, including benign growths, inflammation and infections.

The PSA test serves as a crucial diagnostic tool, which helps doctors identify prostate cancer, before patients develop noticeable symptoms. The combination of digital rectal exams with PSA tests, enhances the ability to detect cancer during its early stages when treatment becomes more effective. Healthcare providers should discuss regular PSA screening with men who belong to high-risk groups, including those above 50 years old, and those with prostate cancer family history. Elevated PSA levels require additional tests including prostate biopsy and imaging studies, to determine cancer presence and spread.
