Radish Leaves: 5 health benefits of these nutritious greens

The mornings these days have begun to carry with them the slight chill of the arrival of winter, an announcement that along with the season, life is also about to change. Along with a wardrobe change, it is also time to change your diet by adding some long-awaited winter vegetables such as radish to it. While the root vegetable's health benefits are not unknown to any, did you know that eating radish leaves is also highly beneficial to the human body? Below are 5 benefits of these nutritious greens you probably didn't know!

2/7

Nutrient powerhouse

Research published in the journal Foods revealed that evidence suggests that radish leaves possess higher nutritional value than the roots themselves. They have elevated levels of protein, ash, dietary fiber and ascorbic acid. Additionally, they are a great source of Vitamin A, Vitamin K, Vitamin C and Vitamin B6.

3/7

Anti-diabetic properties

A study published in the journal Microorganisms, investigated the prebiotic effects of the polysaccharides in radish leaves on gut health and obesity to find that they have prebiotic effects and ferment indigestible polysaccharides to produce short-chain fatty acids and lower the gut pH. Additionally, it also reduced fat accumulation, thus reducing obesity.

4/7

Improves digestion

Research published in the Journal of Functional Foods, found that radish leaves help in gastrointestinal digestion and have positive effects on gut health and metabolic regulation. They support the growth of probiotic bacteria and the high fiber in them promotes regular bowel movements.

5/7

Reduces hypertension

The antioxidant effects of ethyl acetate extract of radish leaves delay the development of hypertension as it increases the serum concentration of nitric oxide and enhances antioxidant activities, as per a study published in Nutrition, Research and Practice.

6/7

Promotes heart health

The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds in radish leaves help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, both of which are linked to heart disease. Adding them to your diet may help with better cardiovascular health.

7/7

How to include radish leaves in your diet?

There are multiple ways of including radish leaves in your diet. You can head the popular kimchi way, eat them raw in your salads, layer them in sandwiches or use them as a base for pesto. Additionally, you can just cook them with the root and enjoy a delicious and healthy meal.
