Reason why your brain prefers simple explanations
When you come across a problem, do you look for a complex multi-step solution or a straightforward approach to solving it? The straightforward one, right? Well, we all love the simple solution. Researchers from the University of Waterloo have found the reason why our brains love simple explanations. They found out that most people find simple explanations more satisfying than complex ones, and there is a fascinating reason behind it.
Headed by PhD candidate Claudia Sehl, the study focused on how people understand and solve the problems in the world around them.T The study included seven experiments involving 2,820 participants, and presenting them with various scenarios, that had both simple and complex explanations or solutions. However, they repetitively found that people preferred simpler explanations and solutions. The researchers ruled out laziness from the question and noted that it was rather our brain’s remarkable efficiency.
In a media release, Sehl said, “These findings show that our preference for simpler explanations mirrors how we evaluate actions. Simplicity isn’t just valued in explanations—it’s part of how we think about achieving results efficiently.”
The research also unveiled a key psychological principle that people are naturally inclined toward explanations involving common and reliable causes. When an explanation appeared rare or unpredictable, participants were less likely to find it convincing. In short, we’re mental economists, consistently seeking the best cognitive payoff with minimal effort.
“Essentially, the more common and reliable a cause, the more appealing it became as both an explanation and a method for achieving outcomes,” Sehl adds.
Co-author Ori Friedman noted that the study suggests we’re hardwired to seek efficiency. “Our research suggests that people care a lot about efficiency—the idea of doing more with less—and that this focus on efficiency affects how people think about both explanations and accomplishments.”
This research published in the journal Cognitive Psychology, sheds light on why simplicity often wins in human reasoning. It also offers a compelling look into the human mind's cognitive preferences for efficiency. The study also emphasizes the power of simplicity in understanding and decision-making.
Well, the next time your heart tells you the simplest solution is the best solution, do not second guess. It might be gut instinct, but it is surely backed by scientific evidence!
