What is GERD?

It's normal to have gas or acidity after a big or spicy meal and it's usually not a big deal. When stomach acid moves up for a short time it can cause burning in the chest or throat. But if acidity is a problem every week or every day it might not just be gas. This could be gastroesophageal reflux disease which is a long term condition where stomach acid often flows back into the food pipe.

Why does acidity turn chronic?

The lower esophageal sphincter is a muscle at the bottom of the food pipe that closes tightly after food enters the stomach. This muscle gets weak or relaxes at the wrong time in GERD which lets acid go up over and over again.
Overeating, being overweight, smoking, drinking alcohol, eating spicy or fried foods often, being stressed, eating at odd times and lying down soon after eating are all common triggers. These habits keep bothering the food pipe over time.

Warning signs you should not ignore

Acidity that comes back is more than just annoying. Heartburn more than twice a week, a sour and bitter taste in the mouth, chest pain, frequent burping, bloating, a chronic cough, a hoarse voice and the feeling that food is stuck while swallowing are all signs of chronic GERD. These signs show that being around acid is becoming common and harmful.

4/6

How GERD damages the food pipe

When acid reflux happens over and over it irritates the lining of the food pipe which causes inflammation called esophagitis. If you don't get treatment, this can cause ulcers, bleeding and scarring that makes the food pipe smaller making it hard to swallow. Long term GERD can sometimes lead to Barrett's esophagus which is when the lining of the esophagus changes and makes it more likely to get esophageal cancer. This is why you should never ignore acidity that keeps coming back.

5/6

Lifestyle changes that can control GERD

The good news is that you can often control GERD by making small changes to your daily life. It can help to eat smaller meals, stay away from foods that make you sick, keep a healthy weight and not lie down for at least two hours after eating. Cutting back on tea, coffee, soda and eating late at night is important. Managing stress and sleeping with your head up are also very important.

6/6

When to see a doctor

If you have acidity every week, it lasts for months and it doesn't get better with simple home remedies you need to see a doctor. Doctors may recommend medications to lower acid levels and protect the food pipe. Getting an early diagnosis stops long term damage and makes life better.
Acidity that comes back over and over again isn't just a problem with digestion, it's a warning sign. If you listen to your body today you could avoid serious health problems tomorrow.
