Sadhguru recommends 3 simple ways to increase longevity and lead a healthy life

Lifestyle changes that can help us live a long and healthy life

Living long and living well; both are not the same. In a world where health trends change with every season, ancient wisdom from yogic sciences still holds powerful truth. Sadhguru, the spiritual teacher and yogi, doesn’t just talk about health as the absence of disease. He speaks of vitality, a kind of inner aliveness that makes one feel truly alive. Longevity, in his view, is not just about adding years to life but adding life to those years.

Here’s a look at three transformative practices Sadhguru recommends, not the usual drink-water-and-sleep-more advice, but practices that address the very design of how the body and energy system work.

2/11

Don’t sleep with a full stomach

Eating late at night and going straight to bed causes indigestion or weight gain. It’s far more damaging than that, it takes away vitality.

According to Sadhguru, the body needs rest at night, not work. But when food is loaded into the stomach before bed, it forces the digestive system to keep working through the night. This not only prevents proper rest but also causes a subtle but steady loss of sensitivity and vitality. The kind of dullness that settles in is what he calls a "partial death," the inability to feel, perceive and experience life with intensity.

Leaving a minimum gap of 3–4 hours between the last meal and bedtime can make digestion efficient, improve sleep quality, and increase the body's energy levels. Over time, the overall health and clarity improve without any supplements or complex diets.

3/11

Build elemental integrity: It’s the root of real fitness

Fitness is about bulging muscles or long treadmill sessions. True strength lies in elemental integrity, how well the five elements (earth, water, fire, air, space) function within.

Modern fitness mostly focuses on muscular strength or cardiovascular endurance. But Sadhguru emphasizes that true well-being comes from aligning the elements inside the body. It’s not about looking strong, it’s about being internally balanced and resilient.

Simple ways to start:

Walk barefoot on soil or grass for at least 30 minutes a day.
Expose the body to natural elements, sunlight, wind, rain as part of daily life.
Practice Angamardana or Upa-Yoga, which requires no equipment and enhances body flexibility, organ health, and mental alertness.

This elemental connection boosts immunity, enhances digestion, and supports emotional balance. It helps the body not just survive, but thrive.

4/11

Eat with awareness, not habit

The more one eats, the more energy one gets. That’s like saying more petrol will make a car faster; it only burns out the engine.

There’s a deeply ingrained habit of eating without awareness, eating because the clock says so or because the food is tasty. But Sadhguru compares the human body to a finely designed machine. Modern cars today run on less fuel with more efficiency; the same principle should apply to the body.

If one becomes more conscious of hunger cues and the type of food being consumed, the quantity automatically reduces. The body needs less food than commonly believed, and overeating burdens the system unnecessarily.

In yogic culture, food is seen not just as nutrition, but as a part of one’s energy body. Seasonal eating, eating with emotional calmness, and being aware of food compatibility with time and body type, these are ancient Indian practices that science is now beginning to understand.

5/11

Reconnecting with the outdoors

Health is maintained through gym sessions and supplements. True healing happens through reconnection with nature.

Daily time spent outdoors is more than a lifestyle choice, it's a biological necessity. Working with plants, walking in the garden, letting the skin feel sun and breeze, these aren’t luxuries but powerful ways to tune the body and mind.

Sadhguru explains that humans are not separate from the earth, in fact, the body's integration with the planet determines how well it functions. Something as simple as gardening or just walking in the mud can recalibrate the body's elemental harmony.

Even 30 minutes a day in natural surroundings can improve hormonal balance, reduce anxiety, and improve digestion and metabolism without any additional medicine.

6/11

Movement without machines

Angamardana, a yogic workout and Upa-Yoga, useful bodily movements, are designed to activate muscles, stimulate organs, and align the body’s energies. These ancient methods don’t just build flexibility and strength but also improve organ health, blood circulation, and mental clarity.

More importantly, these practices are self-sufficient, no trainer, no equipment, no subscriptions. Just the body, breath, and awareness. For anyone looking for sustainable fitness and deeper bodily awareness, these systems are a goldmine.

8/11

How important is meditation?

Meditation is highly important as a practice that offers profound benefits for both mental and physical well-being. It serves as a powerful tool for stress reduction, helping to calm the mind and alleviate anxiety, depression, and even symptoms of stress-related conditions like IBS and PTSD. Regular meditation can enhance self-awareness, improve focus and attention span, lead to better emotional regulation, and even contribute to physical health benefits such as lower blood pressure and improved sleep quality.
